Gov. Malloy has announced a list of new winners in its program to help small businesses expand. Among those winning taxpayer assistance is Reuben’s,  a West Hartford Center deli that is converting to a restaurant and bar.

West Hartford is becoming the restaurant mecca of the region. This is something that needs a subsidy from the state?

From the governor’s office:

West Hartford Deli, Inc. is converting its business into a full-service, mid-priced, bar and restaurant. The company is investing $180,000 and receiving a matching grant of $47,500 for leasehold improvements, machinery and equipment, and training. West Hartford Deli will retain six and hire five new positions.

Perhaps the sign should also say “…and brought to you by Connecticut taxpayers.”

Which is why I’d rather they lower the corporate income tax, make credit easier for all CT businesses to expand and stop picking winners and loser for tax incentives. We already know what that leads to.

It’s the Rube Goldberg system of business friendliness (or graft and patronage) aaht drives companies towards Texas.

Get rid fo the enterprise zones–all of it and lower the taxes across the board. Let the market choose the winners and losers.

New Compnay? You want lower taxes in CT? Here’s the Rube Goldberg “Dog and Pony Show” application! You dance, we dance, you drop some campaign cash and we are good to go.

  2. Been there once…slow service, decent pastrami, skimpy portion, and West Hartford price.

When you spend a lot of money for a sandwich, you shouldn’t leave hungry.

A million hereafter million there, well that’s how Malloy sees it I guess. It’s not his money.

In the current economic condition that this state is in why not spend more money that we don’t have.

Something is seriously wrong if the state feels that it must give tax payers money to companies to encourage them to expand, hire new people and to keep the doors open for business.

Would it not make more sense to rework the states corporation tax structure so that it encourages business to stay, hire, upgrade, train people and be part of the city? No i I suppose it’s just a lot easier to spend money and then turn around and raise taxes and create new ones.

Please, will the last person leaving th state of Connecticut p,ease make sure you turn off the lights. Thank you.

The Nutmeg State what a bunch of takers
Soon we’ll run out of paycheck makers
    Socialism’s about to crash
    We’re running out of cash
Congratulations Connecticut you’ve voted for frauds and fakers

I wish someone in the state legislature – Democrat or Republican; I don’t care – would introduce legislation to outlaw the practice of awarding public money from the state treasurey (taxpayer’s money…) to private enterprise. If the state isn’t creating enough jobs and earning enough tax revenue, it’s because the taxes are too d****d high – corporate and individual.Lower taxes and fees, eliminate burdensome regulations that discourage busiensses from hiring, cut wasteful spending (start by canceling the ‘magic bus’ boondoggle) and watch businesses take off and the tax revenues roll in.

The problem is, Malloy and his dim witted administration is too stupid to understand how private enterprise works.

    Remember in November.

    Here’s another idea: Boycott Reuben’s.

If the owners aren’t smart enough and confident enough to stake their own money in their enterprise, or to rustle up loot from private investors who share their confidence, why should they be able to pick the pockets of the taxpayers?

$64k question: Did the owners contribute any money to Malloy or his Democrat friends? How does a guy like that get the winning ticket to the “Dan Malloy Taxpayer Giveway”?

This is the kind of crap that goes on in Obamaland, or in Putinland.

Well put…didn’t we just give 57million to a Pharma Co. with a net worth in the Billions to move from Chesire to New Haven and 20 million @ 1% intrest after 5yrs.?

One party rule, this is what you get. What people Like Rick Green and other liberal pundits don’t get is that we are in a state of decline and this slide will continue. It’s all very subtle but just look around and the writings on the wall and it’ll take yrs to turn it around…but I doubt we’ll ever elect those who would attempt to stop this charade.

I believe the Malloy administration and his Democrat supporters in the statehouse should all go to their local libraries and take out a copy of Adam Smith’s “An Inquiry Into The Nature and Causes of The Wealth of Nations” – a.k.a., “The Wealth of Nations.” (If going to the library is too much effort, Amazon.com is only a few keystrokes away.)

Hopefully, upon reading it, they might find the wisdom and courage to abandon their profligate, Keynesian ways and fundamentally change the state’s tax code to encourage business growth and expansion. The nation that does not create value-added wealth that it can export for hard currency, cannot long survive; especially if said nation is spending more money than it has. The same can be said for states.

As it is, unless you’re a businessman fortunate enough to have won the “Dan Malloy Taxpayer Giveaway” (hurry and enter, there aren’t many prizes left…), you’re probably looking at other more hospitable states in which to do business.

Is Dan smart enough to even consider this, or his he too dogmatic, hidebound and slavish to his Keynesian suicide pact?

  9. Todd Zaino says:

    Mr. Logical,

I’ll join you in the boycott of Reuben’s. Small portions, prime-time price, I’ll miss that place about as much as I will Obama.

  10. Moron Detector says:

Hey – Obama picks winners and losers on the federal level, clone Malloy is doing it on the state level. We’ll see what he gets from them directly or indirectly.

  11. jscm says:

Ridiculous. ANyone ever here of a bank? The taxpayer shouldn’t be risking tax money on businesses. It is Malloys bribery tour and it’s not his money. Nice a small business finally gets it but if they lowered taxes for all businesses maybe so many wouldn’t be leaving or going under.

    • Magnussen says:

Pfft, why risk your own money when you have Socialst gov. to hand you taxpayer money for you to either squander (which is very likely seeing how bad their rep is and all the fine places to choose over them) or profit from us.

Hey Rick as I tweeted yesterday Ruebens had the Scott Slifka Sandwich on their menu. When I asked the owner of Ruebens as I was having breakfast on their last day of being Ruebens will he still have the Scott Slifka sandwich at the new joint he said ” Scott asked me that but I don’t know yet”. Another no bid public subsidy like Blue Back but at least its only 47k$ not 49million!!! Corrupticut Democrat Crony Capitalism.

  14. Voter says:

Remember when Hartford gave $300,000 to the Hartford 21 market, and it collapsed under its own weight after less than a year?

Meanwhile, across Asylum Street, Al’s Market opened about the same time, with no fanfare, and is thriving. They’re even opening a second market 300 yards away on Trumbull. The lesson?

GOVERNMENT SHOULD STAY OUT OF BUSINESS!!!!!!

More chestnuts of wisdom from Joe Visconti. Relevance is such a short lived, fleeting thing, isn’t it?
