Twardy Report: Donovan’s Clean, Questions Linger.
A month long internal investigation by former U.S. Attorney Stanley Twardy that looked at 140,000 pages of emails, 41,000 computer files and included a review of flash drives and Chris Donovan’s personal iPad and iPhone tells us … little more than what the House Speaker and 5th District candidate told us during a Sunday evening press conference a month ago.
Donovan didn’t know anything. That’s great news if you are a Donovan supporter and certainly what the campaign wanted from this probe.
A spokesman for Donovan said the campaign would have a comment later today.
But if you are among the nearly 44 percent of unaffiliated voters who don’t automatically support a Democrat, questions remain. How is it that Donovan could not know what was going on in a small campaign office? Maybe he didn’t know what his fundraiser was up to. Shouldn’t we expect a guy running for Congress to be on top of his own staff?
The investigation did not interview any of the key players aside from Donovan, who was accompanied by his lawyer. There is no transcript of that discussion. The probe, paid for by the Donovan campaign, found no evidence that Chris Donovan knew of any illegal fundraising activities or even “quid pro quo arrangements.”
Donovan “disliked” being involved in fundraising, though he “demonstrated his understanding” of compliance with federal rules. The report does not explain why Donovan was not more curious about large contributors to his campaign.
“There are lots of people I would have loved to talk to,” Twardy said Thursday, “but I just couldn’t get access.”

This is so staggeringly stupid, there aren’t enough words in the English language to describe how stupid it is.
We’re to believe Donovan did not wrong, based on a report that Donovan bought & paid for? Seriously?
We’re to believe Twardy’s conclusions about Donovan, despite the fact that he could not speak with the key players? Seriously?
If Twardy were intellectually honest and had any integrity, as soon as he’d been blocked by all those defense attorneys, he’d have terminated his investigation, declared himself unable to complete it, and not made any statements about what Donovan did or did not know.
This whole laughable charade of an “investigation” is insulting to the people of Connecticut. It does nothing to ameliorate Connecticut’s appearance of pervasive political corruption. It does nothing to inform anyone about what really was going on in the Donovan campaign.
I’m now all the more convinced that Donovan has a lot to hide. No one who was truly innocent would have attempted this kind of ridiculous exercise. That Twardy is a nominal Republican ultimately means nothing at all. Attorneys are, after all, little more than mercenaries, doing what they are paid to do by their clients.
I’m filing this under “You gotta be freaking kidding me!”
PsiCop is absolutely correct. Twardy diminishes his own reputation by engaging ia a charade whose purpose was to generate a fee for his law firm.
Sadly what’s more disappointing is the Courant agreeing to this sham of an investigation. Why would anyone buy this newspaper for real journalism. If you can’t see this is so ridiculous then you bias is beyond repair. I wonder what your reaction to this would be if it was the other party involved?
