How have things changed since the days in the 1990s when Las Vegas casinos were competing to open resorts in Hartford?

The new plan that MGM Resorts International is pitching for Springfield — just up I-91 — looks more like West Hartford’s Blue Back Square. There will be housing, retail and gambling in an urban renewal-style casino project. The Globe has some of the details and a rendering from MGM. 

Once again, a city looks to gambling to save its soul. In the absence of anything else, maybe that’s the future for a slowly dying New England city.
