No one loves a deal more than me, but really, 9/11 discounts are beyond tasteless and tacky. Nothing about the images, horror and memories of that devastating day in 2001 says “bargain” or “discount” regardless of how it’s presented.
A golf course in Wisconsin learned that the hard way after offering a nine-hole round of golf for $9.11 for nine holes and and 18 holes for $19.11 to “commemorate the 12th anniversary” of 9/11. The ad went viral on social media, the course posted an apology on its Facebook page, cancelled the offer and announced it would make a donation to the 9/11 Memorial Fund.
Here’s what Tumbledown Trails Golf Course in Madison, Wisc. posted:
“We would first like to apologize to everyone that we have upset or feels we have disrespected in anyway. By no means did we mean to do this.
Here is what we will do this Wednesday 9-11; we will still let all that have tee times booked play for the previous rates we posted. Then for all other golf that day we would like to donate the $ difference between our normal rate and the previous price for the day to the 9/11 Memorial.
We hope that everyone will now see this as a positive as we really meant it to be. Again we do sincerely apologize for offending anyone & hope that you do accept our sincere apology.”
The Starkville (Miss) Daily News must have missed the story. Jim Romenesko posted on his blog, jimromenesko.com, that the paper printed a full page ad today which read, “Today Only, sign up for a new subscription or renew your subscription for $9.11 per month.”
