David Glass Closing Cake Business
David Glass is closing his desserts business once again.
In August of 2009, his company, Desserts By David Glass, went into bankruptcy, forcing Glass to shut down his Bloomfield wholesale bakery after 28 years.
He reopened a smaller operation, called Vivie and David Glass’ Delicious Desserts, in an office park in South Windsor in December of 2010. Since then, Glass and wife Vive have baked old favorites and new creations and sold them to walk-in customers each Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
Now he’s shutting down the ovens for the second time.
The cake maker sent out an email to his mailing list on Wednesday afternoon.
It reads:
“GOODBYE CHERISHED CUSTOMERS.
We are closing soon (6-8 weeks) and moving to Vermont permanently.
But don’t despair: we will be baking all of our traditional holiday favorites during the next few weeks.
Check our weekly emails for our baking schedule.
We hope to see all of you at least one more time so that we can say goodbye and thank you.”
Glass says the decision to cease operations was made after his son Adam, 21, died unexpectedly of a heart condition in August.
“We’ve reorganized our priorities,” says Glass. “We’re moving to be closer to family.”
While there isn’t a firm closing date, Glass says he expects it will be sometime in October.
“We’re going to be baking many of our holiday cakes, so that our customers can have them in their freezers for their own family celebrations,” says Glass.
The cake maker started his company in a house in Hartford’s Asylum Hill neighborhood, and built a brand favored by cake connoisseurs around the country. His dessert repertoire, which included the signature Ultimate Chocolate Truffle Cake, was sold at Zabar’s, Whole Foods, Stew Leonard’s, Trader Joe’s and a number of upscale restaurants.

would love to have a piece of cake please tell me where you are so I can go there. sorry to hear that you are closing shop.
Their address is 400 Chapel Road, unit 2D, South Windsor, CT. They’re open on Fridays and Saturdays from 9am-4pm.
Love it
Such sad news. 10 years ago I lived right above their bakery in the Colt building. It was an amazing smell to wake up to every day and a great treat to be able to just walk down a flight of stairs and buy premier quality desserts. I will definitely be stopping by before they close for good.
David and Vivie are salt-of-the-Earth folks and will be sorely missed. I wish them peace and happiness in their new life in Vermont.
Good.
How many times can you cry wolf

I tend to agree with Mark. I am sad when any independent business shuts its doors, and I hope these folks do well in Vermont in retirement. But, since 2009 the Courant, especially the Java column, has given free advertisement to this business many, many times. Seriously, how many small businesses get this kind of press whether in or going out of business. You’d have to pay good money for this type of print ad.
You miss the ultimate point, Rick. The Courant ran these items because a good chunk of readership is interested. Glass’ products have struck a nerve because they are special. Most other small businesses just aren’t as good. It’s a true loss to the area.
I had the AWESOME privilage of working for Dave and Vivie – they are the sweetest ever (just like their cakes lol) – I will really miss you guys but will be by b4 u close your doors – Mark if you don’t have something positive to say don’t belittle yourself by saying something stupid.
David, Vivie and their special deserts will be greatly missed. I’ve followed them from Hartford to Bloomfield to S. Windsor. I wish them well and hope to see them in Vermont.
