There are just 27 days until the holiday shopping season officially begins. If your typical Black Friday routine includes staggering out of bed before dawn, throwing a stale granola bar in your bag, fighting the crowds at the mall and then collapsing at home among the day-after-Thanksgiving-dinner detritus, you might want to consider more upscale alternatives.
Hotels, inns and B&Bs around the northeast are offering special packages that give a whole new meaning to the term “retail therapy.” Along with accommodations, these shop-and-stay getaways offer such perks as special transportation to and from stores, gift certificates and discount coupons, gourmet picnic lunches, spa treatments and post-shopping libations. (All packages are based on availability and prices do not include taxes or gratuities.)
Take the Shop And Stay Escape at Tidewater Inn Bed & Breakfast in Madison, for example. The two-night package, which ranges in price from $370 to $550, (depending on dates and rooms chosen), includes a Tidewater Inn tote, gift certificate for lunch, coupon books for Clinton Crossing Premium Outlets and Tanger Outlets and afternoon tea or wine and cheese. (Information: www.thetidewater.com or 203-245-8457.)
“This type of package is particularly popular this time of year, especially for girlfriend getaways or mother and daughter trips. It’s a fun way to do your holiday shopping,” says innkeeper Victoria Kolyva. “We have a good combination of shopping nearby, including unique shops in Madison and the Clinton and Westbrook outlets that are just a short drive away.”
Book anytime in December and make purchases at stores in downtown Madison and Kolyva will even wrap up to five of your gifts for you.
