New FTC Texting Rule Forces You To Act To Keep Getting Those Deal Alerts

FTCEver signed up to receive text messages from a retailer or restaurant chain in order to receive advance notice of sales or special discounts and coupons? If you have, you’ve probably received a text message in the past few days asking you if you want to continue getting those alerts.

A message sent by Chipotle reads “Don’t miss out on tasty offers + texts from Chipotle. Reply STAY to keep getting automated text msgs to this #.”

Lord & Taylor sent this to its subscribers: “Still want your coupons? New rules require you to opt in. Reply YES to receive.”

Target’s alert reads: “Act now to keep mobile offers coming. New law requires your OK.”

Those messages aren’t a scam.

New FTC requirements mandate that any companies sending out marketing text messages must have members confirm that they want to continue their subscriptions. Toys R Us, Chipotle, Macy’s and other companies have all sent out notifications to subscribers. If you don’t reply, you’ll won’t be receiving any more special deals and coupons.

The law takes effect on Wednesday, Oct. 16. You could go to the FCC page for more information – if it wasn’t closed due to the government shutdown.
