Trader Joe’s has issued a voluntary recall of its Creamy Salted Valencia Peanut Butter (sku 97111), Valencia Peanut Butter with Roasted Flaxseeds (sku 98927) and Almond Butter with Roasted Flaxseeds (sku 94079) because of potential contamination with salmonella.

Customers who have purchased these items are urged to not eat the products, and to dispose of them or return them to any Trader Joe’s store for a full refund.  The recalled products were distributed to TRader Joe’s nationwide, including to stores in Connecticut.

The peanut butter has been implicated in a nationwide salmonellosis outbreak. Nationally, there have been 29 reported cases of illness, with three illnesses reported in Connecticut.

In response to the recall, Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection food safety inspectors and State and local health departments are working with Trader Joe’s supermarkets in the state to ensure that the recalled peanut butter has been removed from store shelves.

“We are urging caution in this situation and asking Trader Joe’s customers who have this item to not eat the product and to dispose of it or return it to any Trader Joe’s for a full refund,” Consumer Protection Commissioner William M. Rubenstein said.

The products come in 16 ounce, plastic jars with expiration dates stamped below or on top of the lids.  All code dates are included in this recall—up to and including 24SEPT13 (September 24, 2013).

Production and distribution of the item has been suspended while the FDA and their nut butter supplier continue their investigations.

I would like to add that Trader Joe’s is not the only retailer involved in the recall. They were merely the first company to initiate a VOLUNTARY recall. They have been victimized and overly highlighted for being forthcoming and proactive. Several other retailers who also sell the same product under a different brand label were slow to pull the products from their shelves. They waited until the manufacturer requested the recall whereas Trader Joe’s pulled the product as soon as there was a suspicion of contamination. As stated in other more complete articles the other products manufactured in the affected plant could have contamination, there just has been no confirmation. There were products produced on the same equipment that were sold to other production facilities(What retail location buys a 500lb container?) The products those facilities may still be sitting on store shelves and not recalled yet. This could have created illnesses, or could create further illness that will be much more difficult to track. If it’s at all traceable then the buzz will have died down about this recall and those suppliers images will remain untarnished. In the meantime Trader Joe’s image will forever have a blemish because they were the most honorable and proactive retailer involved in this whole ordeal.
This article only furthers the undue tarnishing of Trader Joe’s image by publishing an outdated article with incomplete information.
Other news outlets have continued to update the information in their articles or even publish completely new articles. They seem to be doing their journalistic duty however I believe you are not. I would ask that you either retract this article or edit it to show the most current information as to not unfairly put a negative slant toward Trader Joe’s in your article even though they have been the most proactive party when it comes to this horrible situation.

    Thank you,

    Patrick Carroll
