Walmart will open its first neighborhood grocery store in West Hartford later this month, the retailer already has been expanding it

Wal-Mart’s newest Neighborhood Market holds a grand opening on Wednesday, Feb. 20 in West Hartford. The 59,000-square-foot, full-service grocery store,  in Bishop’s Corner (behind Marshalls), is the company’s first  Northeast location.

Doors open with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 7:30 a.m. and there will be entertainment, free product samples and giveaways throughout the day.

The new store, which occupies the former site of Adam’s Supermarket at  333 N. Main St., features a bakery, deli, prepared foods,  fresh produce, frozen foods, meat and dairy and health and wellness departments, along with a pharmacy and general merchandise section with stationery, paper goods and household and pet supplies.

“We are very pleased to have Walmart make this investment in our community,” said West Hartford town manager, Ron Van Winkle, in a press release. “This new venture of a “Walmart Neighborhood Market” is a welcome concept and we look forward to their success. The facility they are occupying has been empty for many years and having that store put back into use is a boom for our local economy, the shoppers and their employees.”

The store will also offer Site-to-Store, a service that allows customers to ship online orders from www.walmart.com free to any Walmart store for pickup and the Pay with Cash program, which allows customers to order online (without a credit card) at Walmart.com and pay for the items with cash in-store.

Regular store hours are 6 a.m. to 11 p.m, seven days a week.  Information: 860-509-1705 or walmart.com.

A visit to Walmart to start off the year, on Jan. 9, did not yield a sparkling report. Among the critical violations were a host of expired items: Slim Jims, trail mix, muffins, turkey bites, Big Dippers, Golden Puffs cereal and an entire case of collard greens. Terry spoke with a manager, who indicated that Walmart’s transition into a Super Walmart had created some obstacles. “However,” wrote Terry, “there were far too many expired items found. They must be diligent about checking dates.”

Not sure why you think it has done more for people. Walmart workers get paid so little that most need to take advantage of medicaid. They have raised numerous complaints about abuses including being locked in the store overnight and being forced to work overtime off the books. Overseas their workers died in a fire due to failing to follow safety regulations. Many local towns have refused to let them in, because when Walmart comes in other local businesses close, putting people out of work. Other stores manage to have low prices with out hurting people-check out Costco for example. It is not the only model, it is not a necessary model, it is just the model that makes the Waltons the wealthiest.
