Doc Watson, the blind bluegrass musician and winner of seven Grammy awards, died Tuesday at the Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

His skillful playing technique and storytelling were renowned across genres of traditional American music, from folk to bluegrass to country.

Watson had undergone colon surgery Thursday. He was 89 years old.
