In a move that seems 60 years too late, two state legislators are opposing a proposed bond for the People’s Center in New Haven based on potential ties to Communism.

Senator Andrew Roraback (R- Goshen) and Rep. Sean Williams (R-Watertown) said the $300,000 bond for roof and foundation repairs should not be awarded because the 161 year old building houses a ‘bureau’ of People’s World, a Communist Party newspaper.

The community center on Howe Street has played host to numerous area artists and musicians over the years, including a show four years ago featuring Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth and psychedelic saxophonist Paul Flaherty.
