Fall Outlook: A Short List For Concerts In The Colder Months
Labor Day is all cookouts and swimming pools, but before you know it there will be lines of shivering kids waiting for tickets outside venues. Fall starts out with a bang, and there’s ample shows lined up to keep your fire warm through the cold winter months.
Here’s a few concerts that should be on your short list of things to check out this fall.
There’s never a way to include everything, so if you have any suggestions, give the show a shoutout and add it in the comments.
Bob Dylan: It’s been a big year for Dylan, who celebrates 2012 with the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the release of his thirty-fifth studio album, “Tempest.” He makes two stops in the area the weekend before “Tempest” is released, at Mountain Park Sept. 7 and Mohegan Sun Sept. 8. Information: Holyoke: 413-586-8686 or www.iheg.com, Uncasville: 860-862-7163 or www.mohegansun.com.
Odd Future: The future is nothing but bright for this wonky collective from the West Coast. Recently named by Rolling Stone as one of the most “essential” hip hop crews, Odd Future is the product of rap meeting Web 2.0. They come to The Dome At Oakdale Sept. 8. Information: 203-265-1501 or www.oakdale.com.
Ben Folds Five: In the new era of rock reunions, Ben Folds Five fans waited patiently with their fingers crossed. They are rewarded. One of the more worthy bands to get back together, this tour not only features the original members but also previews a new album, set to drop five days after their Sept. 13 performance at Mountain Park. Information: 413-586-8686 or www.iheg.com.
BRAIDS:Cutting through the dearth of electro art-pop, this group out of Canada pulls in listeners through samples deftly etched into song structure and unabashed vocal craftings. Our friendly neighbors to the North play the Iron Horse Sept. 20. Information: 413-586-8686 or www.iheg.com.
Nas: With the recent release of “Live Is Good,” Nas takes a walk down memory lane for both the good times and bad. He comes to the MGM Grand Theater at Foxwoods on Sept. 22. Information: 866-646-0609 or www.foxwoods.com.
The Antlers: One of the greatest parts of this show is simply its location- at the Center Church on the Green in New Haven. A place of quiet and peace seems the perfect venue for the spacey glow The Antlers bring. The show is Sept. 23, which, appropriately, is a Sunday. Information: www.manicproductions.org.
Morrissey: The fact that Morrissey has kept performing and drawing crowds for all these years is a testament to itself. The fact that he still conducts the crotchety, abrasive British wit he is so known for makes this a concert that should not be missed. The Palace Theater in Waterbury welcomes him Saturday, October 6. Information: 203-755-4700 or www.palacetheaterct.org.
John Legend: This man is considered by some to have one of the silkiest voices in music today. Legend’s recent work includes a collaborative album with The Roots titled “Wake Up!,” a collection of funkified soul classics with a message of social awareness. His performance Oct. 26 at MGM Grand, however, will be tied to his yet-to-be-released album “Love In The Future.” Information: 866-646-0609 or www.foxwoods.com.
The Misfits: This band wants your skull, and what better time to give it to them than the night before Halloween? Club INT is welcoming the original horror-punk rockers in this pre-fright night party on Oct. 30. You won’t be the only one in skeleton makeup. Information: 860-214-5855 or www.facebook.com/CLUBINTCT
Neil Young & Crazy Horse, Patti Smith: Both having released albums the first week of June, these two titans of the art will share the Webster Bank Arena Tuesday, Dec. 4. Young & Crazy Horse plan to release their second album this year, “Psychedelic Pill,” in October. A good way to end out 2012. Information: 203-345-2300 or www.websterbankarena.com.
