It was the show that some in the New Haven area didn’t want to happen. Ted Nugent, the libertarian, staunch defender of gun rights, and hip-shooter of inflammatory rhetoric, was at Toad’s Place last night. And so were protestors.
Online petitions began several weeks ago as Nugent made remarks about the acquittal of George Zimmerman, who was charged with the death of 17 year old Trayvon Martin. Groups called for Toad’s Place owner Brian Phelps to cancel the show, which he refused to do, citing Nugent’s freedom of expression. Click here to read more on the issue.
Fox CT’s Beau Berman reports a group of roughly 50 protesters greeted Nugent and his fans in front of the venue. They picketed with signs decrying Nugent’s statements on Trayvon Martin while chanting “Hey hey, ho ho, let’s shut down this racist show.”
Meanwhile Nugent supporters nearby held their own signs saying “Ted is tough” and “Ted 4 prez.” The rocker took to Twitter later in the night to say the show was sold out, and to sing the praises of the New Haven Police Department and Toads Place security.
