New Haven’s Firehouse 12, one of the best places in the state to hear contemporary jazz, kicks off its ninth annual Spring Jazz Series on Friday, March 21 with a performance by the Ben Allison Trio.
Allison, a bassist and composer with 11 albums as a bandleader under his belt, grew up in New Haven, where he attended the ACES Educational Center for the Arts and Wilbur Cross High School before heading off to NYU to study jazz performance. His show at Firehouse 12 will spotlight the music of Jim Hall, Jimmy Giuffre and others, performed by Allison, guitarist Steve Cardenas and saxophonist Ted Nash.
The Spring Jazz Series continues with a two-set performance every Friday night through June 13, ranging from Firehouse 12 debuts by Kevin Hays and Russ Nolan to sets by veterans of the space, including Taylor Ho Bynum, Noah Baerman and Mary Halvorson.
Tickets for all events are $18 for the first set (8:30 p.m.) and $12 for the second set (10 p.m.). Head to firehouse12.com or call 203-785-0468 for tickets. Season passes are also available for $200 — quite a deal.
