Those cheeky lads in One Direction are so confident of their staying power that they’ve already booked a headlining tour for next summer — that is, 2013 — but you needn’t wait that long to see them: The English boy band starts this summer’s tour May 22 at Mohegan Sun, an announcement that came a little too late to be in the running for the summer arts guide running Sunday.
Anyway, tickets go on sale Saturday, April 28, at 10 a.m. for $59.50, $49.50, $39.50 and $29.50, via www.ticketmaster.com.
The band began in 2010 when the five members — Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson — applied as solo acts for the seventh season of Britian’s “The X Factor.” When they didn’t make the cut, they were put together in what became One Direction. They finished third on the show, signed with Simon Cowell’s record label (and Columbia in the U.S.) and released their debut, “Up All Night,” last year.
The album has been a considerable success, hitting No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart in the United States, and charting on two dozen other pop tallies around the world. One Direction played MGM Grand at Foxwoods earlier this year, opening for Big Time Rush. The group also appeared on “Saturday Night Live.” In other words, there’s pretty much no question that any tween girl you know is conversant about the band, its songs, the members’ likes and dislikes and which one has the blond hair. (It’s Niall. We think.)
Don’t look back, Justin Bieber — One Direction might be gaining.
