It was only a few months ago that The Reducers lost bassist Steve Kaika to cancer. In that short time, an outpouring of support from around the globe arrived to create “Rave On: A Tribute To The Reducers: Vol. 1″

The 24 track album, released by Good Sponge Records, is the first of what could very well be many albums paying tribute to The Reducers. The New London rockers were around for 34 years, and the subject of a 2006 documentary for being deemed “America’s best unsigned band” by CMJ thirty years prior.

Notable on the album are tracks contributed by five Japanese bands influenced by The Reducers (two of which toured with the group in 2004), as well as California based The Backstabbers, who are fronted by Kaika’s nephew.

The Reducers perform their first show in June of 1978. (Handout Photo)

“Rave On” is a romp through the group’s catalog, starting with the introductory track on 1984′s “Let’s Go”and ending with the finale to 1995′s “Shinola,” a beachy instrumental called “Endless Bummer.”

Proceeds from the album go to benefit Steve Kaika’s family, who are still paying bills from his long struggle against cancer.

An album release party this past weekend also went to benefit the family. The show was at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center Rose Barn in Waterford, the site of the first Reducers show in 1978.
