Concert Review: Wild Flag Brings Volatile Energy To Toad’s Place In New Haven

Wild Flag is, from left, Janet Weiss, Mary Timony, Rebecca Cole and Carrie Brownstein. (Photo by David Torch)

It took Wild Flag a few songs before the musicians truly locked in Friday night at Toad’s Place in New Haven, but the results were explosive once they did.

Once the foursome clicked, the band played with frenetic abandon, their coiled energy erupting in a hale of leg kicks and jagged guitar leads. Wild Flag is an indie-rock super-group of sorts, pairing singer/guitarist (and “Portlandia” star) Carrie Brownstein and drummer Janet Weiss of Sleater-Kinney with guitarist/singer Mary Timony of Helium and keyboardist Rebecca Cole of the Minders. It makes for a wonderfully volatile combination, on songs at once spiky and joyous.
