This time of year in Connecticut is often an exciting time with both UConn basketball teams usually being invited to the NCAA Tournament. Not only do we look forward to following the local schools but we have office pools and non-stop television coverage to add to the experience. In recent years, the NCAA has done an exceptional job of marketing their tournament through digital and social media, adding yet another layer to tournament excitement.
There are a bunch of apps out there made for the tournament but the one truly worth downloading is the official NCAA March Madness Live app. The app is a free download and for $3.99 March Madness Live allows you to watch every game as it airs in case you can’t make it to a television during game time (otherwise known as you’re at work). The app is also loaded with some free features to complement your game watching experience. It comes loaded with a bracket for you to fill out and enter into a contest and many alert options, including: team-specific alerts, potential upsets, overtime and close games inside of five minutes.
I used the app a lot last year, even when I was home and in front of a TV. If there are two great games on and you don’t feel like flipping back and forth between channels, setting up your Apple or Android device to watch one game while your TV has another is very convenient.
As you can see in the above picture, March Madness also has quite the presence on Facebook with over 232,000 likes. This allows the NCAA to upload pictures, engage their readers and direct users to other Facebook pages for people to like.
Throughout the tournament, March Madness will be a prominent trend on Twitter, too. As of this writing, a few hours before the bracket is announced, most of the national trends are college basketball related.
Business Insider has a comprehensive list of things that organizations can learn from the marketing of March Madness here if you’re so inclined.
Enjoy the Madness!
