Mailbag July 5: Should UConn Nation Be Concerned It Only Has Five Recruits
Hey Des, Should UConn Nation be concerned that they have only 5 recruits for 2013 so far? Other schools have as many as 12 for the same year. Nate, Cromwell
A: I don’t think so Nate. There are an awful lot of kids who play football and a lot of them are going to get scholarships. To my knowledge no school has said it has no more scholarships to give – on July 5. Players have until first week in February to commit. They have time and the coaches have time to recruit them. Thanks

BE is in a tailspin and Uconn is not a big time national program in the other 49 states. In addition, colleges recruiting the same players are denegrading the future of the BE. If a three star commits to uconn he becomes a 2 star or less. With all of that the Uconn staff is doing a good job convincing kids to commit to storrs
So far Dez gets the helmet sticker in this one.
James gets a personal, 15 yards for the team and a quarter on the bench for himself.
This for thinking all sane people are UCONN football fans. The laugh factor kept to only a quarter…..
Hey Dez… Hope ypur summer is going good for you! Here is a non-controversial vanilla question. Do u know who the co-captains will be this year? If u named them already, sorry that I missed it
honest reporting as always…you always tell it like it is with a big smile on your face…so refreshing!
Hi there! Good seeing you in April… Nothing yet on captains. I would assume CB Blidi Wreh-Wilson will be one for sure. I like LB Sio Moore, OL Adam Masters and KR/PR Nick Williams too – but that’s just me. We’ll have to see who they actually are. That could be after practice begins or announced prior to season opener
Dez is not a company man. He’s a Syracuse grad, and because of that alone, I know he has to be smart, charming, honest and he could steal any one of your women if they ever met him.
All kidding aside, if you want to be alarmed, fine; but don’t insult a good journalist because he doesn’t share your panic.
You and Dez have my deepest apologies,I was merely stating my personal opinion and I did not mean for it to sound insulting. I am sure he is smart and charming and honest as well. I am sorry if you or anyone else felt I was insulting to him. I just feel that he should be a lot harder on the program as whole and I don’t see that in his columns.
apology accepted
from all kidding aside on down your response was better than mine. Not surprised. Thank You
Of course we shoud be concerned, what sane person would not be concerned. As far as Dez well he is a company man and he always has been He can’t really ever come down hard on UCONN or the coaches otherwise his ACCESS will to the team disappears. When Feb. comes and we are still last in recruiting it will be DEZ’S job to come up with another reason that fit’s into the UNCONN narrative.
Really sad we don’t have someone who will hold UCONN accountable for there awful hiring of the mummy to be our coach.
Me and company man in the same sentence? I’m emailing this to some “company”,people right now. This is too funny and I’m sure they’ll get a kick out of it because that is clear evidence of someone who knows zero about me.
For the record, James, access, for me, positive or negative coverage-wise, is a non-issue.
….Really hollow comment wasn’t worthy of a response but hopefully it makes your day James
It may or may not be worthy of a response but the fact you responded anyway shows me that you are defensive of the facts. I base everything I say on your column and the supportive nature you seem to hold for the firings and hirings in this program. While it is true I do not personally know you, again I can read and from that I judge on that basis. I can not wait till Feb. when you have ‘new ” reasons for all us UCONN fans not panic,it will also be fun to read you defend another terrible season with coach zombie at the helm but I am sure you will hold him and his coaches accountable LOL.
No James whats funny is that no matter what I write as critical as you are of me, wishing there was someone else, you’ve just admitted you’ll still be right here reading – like that was some secret. Love it when critics choke on their own words and the copy is there for all to see like you have here. I think we can let this go now, right? You let your opinion be known as well as well, you know. I’m letting it go James. I don’t think this is working. Have a good one.
Dez, you enjoy your vacation. I liked your answer and appreciate your patience and tireless dedication. Be good
Thanks Manny!
Gezz some vacation Dez having to put up with us. I do know where we recruited our center from Penn State (thanks Dez), a receiver from Clemson and a linebacker from the Florida Gators. A lot of pieces coming together.
Boy can we be ungrateful at times. Can anyone tell me which reporter gives UConn football as much attention as Dez does? The guy goes above and beyond and people for some reason just like to give him grief. Who else is answering questions in the off season, tweeting news and pics from Easley’s camp?
I hope we get a bit better about biting the hand that feeds us. Dez usually takes July off so he may even be on vacation right now.
Thanks Chris. Actually youre right. I am on vacation so let me go on and do that. Again thanks for this for a lot of reasons, yes, thank you
Hey Des, Thanks for answering my question. I appreciate it. My concern is that UConn has 5 so far and that is the lowest of all the Big East teams. No offense to Temple but they currently have more. I realize it is early, but I’m getting worried.
Nate, UConn currently has offers out to 39 players, not including the ones they already ave committed. It’s not like UConn is not recruiting players. They have offers out there and it’s up to he kids to make a decision. Just because Temple has more commitments does not mean they are he best out there. They may be jumping quick to make a decision and get it out of the way for their senior season. Whatever the reason is for their lack of number of commitments to this point,it’s not for lack of effort, I am sure.
Understood but I still maintain it is too early to be concern. It’s July 5. There are many fine players available they can get between now and the signing period in February. Also, lets keep an eye on the transfer wire. the staff did that last season pulling in a few from BCS programs and experience. This freshman class, to me, proves the staff can recruit. Lets let the staff do what it is supposed to do and go from there but I think its too early to be concerned
I apoligize for my over reaction.
Accepted my man. Accepted.
The better answer is the one Frank gave. If Des would have addressed his response in that manner, we wouldn’t be discussing this now. But I guess that what the Courant wants. UCONN is not any of those top programs which they are striving to be. I just feel sports writers should view the avergae fan knowing what he or she is talking about and answer the question. Dez’s original answer did not address the question. Just because there are a lot of kids who play football and will recieve offers doesn’t answer the question.
I gave an answer you don’t like it nothing I can do. It’s factual and that’s all that matters to me
And to your exact point, he is a reporter he doesn’t go on the recruiting trail with the coaches. He fairly answered the question in saying that there are plenty of remaining athletes out there without scholarships, therefore at this point there should not be cause for concern. If I ask him what color Gatorade the team is going to drink this year and he doesn’t know is it his fault I asked the dumb question?
Dc my man, I don’t know if it hurts more from laughing so hard or the ridiculous amount if overreaction by SOME people. UConn has never had more than 5-10 recruits at this point in the process and won’t for a while. Stop overreacting and remember the main thing: we are not Michigan, Arizona or A&M! They get recruits based on their history and the depth of their program. We have to work a little bit harder and find those diamonds in he rough or convince tha kid on the fence that is the place for them. I think all I am concerned with are the unrealistic expectations put in this team and HCPP. It never seems to be good enough to let this program grow as it should. Heeh people!
Arizona? 4-8 last year, 32-31 over the last 5 years.
Texas A&M? 7-6 last year, 26-25 over the last 4 years.
These aren’t power teams, just middle of the pack, nothing special teams. What history or depth are you talking about?
No need for the smart comments Dez, I think it is a logit questions. If UCONN wants to be considered or think they are on thier way to being a program that can compete year in and year out, then the question should be asked. maybe the question is how are the other schools in the Big East doing in this area. You sports writers think you know it all. I am not saying fans do either, but I think it is a good question and desrves more than the smart remarks.
Ummm… Pretty sure he did give it a legitimate answer and he was met with unrealistic data to stack UConn up against.
Sir with all due respect please don’t tell me how to react on what is clearly a mailbag question addressed to ME on MY blog. I have an immediate supervisor and bosses in to Thanks and you have a great day
It’s not that some schools have “as many as 12 recruits”. In fact, Texas A&M has 24 commitments, Michigan and Arizona each have 22, LSU has 19, and the list goes on. Dez, you might have pointed out that almost 800 kids have made commitments to BCS schools, and that the average for those schools is about 12 commitments. Although it’s not late in the process, it’s not early either. UConn has had a large number of kids go elsewhere, and it may well be time for some concern.
I’m sorry Nate. I’m wrong. Pat is right. Be concerned.
I’m sorry Nate. DC is right. As always.
Mmm…I will say I’m not always wrong. Always right? No one is always right, not even me. But again, if my answer was wrong please prove it to me, anyone, and I will post a huge apology. If I’m not wrong then the issue is more specifics and I don’t know how I can be specific about recruiting when no one see can be. Thanks for chiming in
DC isn’t always right. He’s not a car race fan. Car racing is awesome.
Ha – love this guy Chris, er, TheJerk
Funny DC. Enjoy Vaca. Once August hits I’ll be hitting you up!!!
Thanks man – look forward to it
Everyone may be correct in their postulations about lack of recruits. But I am nervous about it. Last year at this time I “believe” (could be wrong) that PP had 10-11 recruits. I was flying high because RE never had close to that many at the end of June. This may be a sign of things to come based (1) on poor reception of BE as a major league (2) possible exclusion of BE from NC discussions for any BE team, and (3) poor on field performance of UConn in 2011, and (4) major branding teams no longer in conference. I could see why some recruits may hold out on commitments to any BE team. Yeah, I’m nervous!
