The Big East is finalizing its preseason football media poll today.

You won’t see the full poll until Media Day July 31. I was asked to vote. So you can see the poll I sent in today right now:

1. Louisville (nice QB in Teddy Bridgewater and soon-to-be-great coach Charlie Strong)

2. Connecticut (defense could very well be among top five in country and if a couple other things fall into place namely adequate depth in a couple spots sky is limit; offense will be good enough)

3. Rutgers (could have been put in the two-hole as well but UConn drilled Rutgers last year and that wasn’t an accident; Knights were completely taken apart in that game; new coach but defense will be awesome)

4. South Florida – you know until it shows it can do something besides tank at the end of the year when it counts the Bulls ride here for now in my opinion.

5. Cincinnati – Lost so much including multi-purpose star Isaiah Pead.

6. Pittsburgh – I always like Pitt, rank em high and get disappointed – Panthers going here this time around.

7. Syracuse – I can’t see Orange any higher than this.

8. Temple – Steve Addazio won’t have Owls here very long. Great coach. He’ll make it happen but the start will be a little rough.

Representing UConn in Newport at media day:

TE Ryan Griffin
CB Blidi Wreh-Wilson
RB Lyle McCombs and
DE Trevardo Williams

Also, zero confirmation so far on both “commitments” being reported elsewhere.

    Dez,

    Just saw this thread.

People look at last year’s record and assume things. People in other parts of the Country Pick Uconn 6th or 7th b/c of their record last year. They don’t see that they should have won 3 of 4 close games.
Anyone who knows Football can see that their is a lot of Talent on UCONN’s Football Team all over. Not just the Defense, but the Offense is going to be Improved in every area, the question is how much improved.

This team will be a disappointment if they do Not get 8 or 9 regular season wins.

Kudos to the staff for Addressing major needs since last season. Very Excited for the Season to Start.

DC I think you do a great job and I think you tell it like it is. I have never found you to be a homer. I think your pick is a bit optimistic, maybe even bold but by no means would surprise me. You know this team and this league as well as anyone. In this league if you can play great D and score a few points you will be in the race till the end. I think we will know a lot about this team early, as opposed to some years where you don’t get a good match up until week 5 or 6. By week 3 we will know.

    Dez,

I hat to disagree with you but I have to on one point. Charlie Strong is not a soon to be great coach…he already is! I am stunned it took this guy this long to get a HC job. I have been following him since his days at UF! What a great guy and his defensive mind is maybe the best in the business.

  4. UCONNFB says:

Second place in the Conference; from your lips to God’s ears! Amen.

  5. RST says:

I will probably squander whatever credibility I have here and get thoroughly flamed, but if they are going to finish second, that presupposes a couple things. Let’s assume those things happen. So my question is, if second, then why not first?

You heard it here first. The Huskies will win the BE this year. Flame away folks, but keep in mind that I do not smoke, so that possibility has not colored my judgement. I can see it happening, and when it does, all you doubters will owe me a Blue Point under the scoreboard at the last home game.

    • Sillyboy says:

RST, please—you are not going out on a limb. Per my earlier post, would it be truly shocking for any of our 8 to win the Big East? I see all the conference games being winable by anyone.

  6. Sillyboy says:

C’mon folks, for our league Dez’s predictions are no worse or no better than anyone elses at this point. We have 8 teams, no title game, and the last 2 years have had almost half the conference (3 schools each season) tied and “claiming” the championship. We are on the verge of competitive mediocredity so you can pull a name out of a hat and no one should challenge you…

  7. JoeP says:

Hi Dez – Nothing wrong with your predictions though 2nd for the Huskies may be a little optimistic.

Really depends on whether we can score points. I have yo believe the offense will be greatly improved.

    • dconner says:

No I know there’s nothing wrong with that. I was talking to one of the leagues senior writers – he might be the senior most – yesterday about his poll. He put UConn third only because he wasn’t sold on the offense. That is totally understandable – totally. He hasn’t seen the offense. I have. As I pointed out yesterday I think it will be good enough. I’m not the don downer type meaning I don’t think negative right off the bat like some people. I think positive first. Now if they don’t finish second so be it it is a prediction but it kills me how the programs own fans… Eh, you have a good day Joe.

  8. CTFaninNJ says:

Objective journalism? A great year this year would be to finish 5th and get a bowl bid.

    • dconner says:

For now I’m going to believe you didn’t mean anything negative by the objective journalism comment. Remember I’m not Phil Steele or Rivals or any of those folks. I actually watch the teams in the league play and cover UConn. All these people ranking the Big East you think they actually do what I do? Mmm no I don’t think so. Ir doesn’t matter in the long run but I hope I’m over-reacting to your comment because I take objective journalism seriously and this seems like a direct shot at my work. Goodness I hope I’m wrong. Thanks

    • dconner says:

C’mon man lets go we gotta deal with this.

      • Frank says:

DC my man, dont take that shot personally. People get brave behind the computer screen. I dont know if I think UC is going to be second but I think the defense is going to be nasty this year. I take your opinion very seriously because you actually see the team more than anyone of us. Keep up the great work!

        • dconner says:

John is a regular here that’s why I’m baffled by his comment. I like the kids and coaches and a lot of other people at UConn but to suggest what he’s suggesting hurt. Do I go easy on the players at times when I shouldn’t? Yes. Guilty. I don’t believe we should knocking these kids down. Most people see these guys solely as football players. I don’t and I think I’m unique around here in that regard and I think people respect me for that. Whether they do or not that’s just how I’m wired Frank. Bottom line I’ll say this but you already know it: there is zero reason for me to rank UConn where I did except for the simple fact that right now that’s where I think they can finish. Now I’d UConn fans – fans now – don’t accept that don’t accept but don’t accuse me of not being objective. Not only is it unfair and inaccurate it is an attack on me professionally. But I have to do something about people dissing the only person who covers UConn Football year round. We have to do something.

          • CTFaninNJ says:

DC, if you truly believe UConn will finish #2, that is fine, but your heart may be steering the ship a bit. You are human and you become fond of these young men, even cheering for them to accomplish great feats that what most feel are unattainable. Most know that the preseason polls are meaningless, but to think the Huskies would go 5-2 to capture the #2 spot is a stretch. Please, I pray that I am dead wrong and you are spot on!

          • dconner says:

If I picked with my heart I would have picked Syracuse No.1 dont you think? cuz thats where my heart is – not UConn. And cheering for them to reach unattainable feats? You mean like President or head of a company that hires a lot of people, feats like that? You got me there. I just cover the team and the games. I don’t have a single expectation for them on-field performance. That’s up to you and the people who PAY to go to games. I just write about what they do or didn’t do – for the record

  9. Chris says:

Man I hope your vacation is over cuz you’re working too much.

I think the Huskies can finish that high but a lot of things will need to fall in place. Namely, OL and QB play needs to take a huge step up from last year. Also, the young pups at Safety really need to grow into their roles and learn their assignments. Lots of upside with Brown and Jones.

All those things happen there is no reason why we can’t win this league.

    • dconner says:

Ha no its not over but I want to stay on top of the news at least so I’ll be checking in as it happens or will try to

    • dconner says:

OL will come around I think I think see u will see upgrade at position with protection

      • Andrew says:

The OL are all pretty big and have some experience. I would say they’ll be fine but am a little concerned with center.

Dc – I have read your blog a long time and take the fct that you put uconn #2 as a really positive thing because of how unbiased you’ve been. This must be an indication that you saw some good stuff on offense during The spring. Can’t wait for the season to start!

        • dconner says:

combined with the defense which I think will be extraordinary and the offense being improved I think second is a very real possibility and so is league champion. Thats not optimism. That’s a fact but for now I think the 1, 7 and eight positions are secure… after that?
