Per ESPN herself:  Big East Shopping For New TV Deal

Goodl because many believe the network has done its best to destroy the league anyway…why hang? Loyalty? It certainly didn’t show the Big East any, just certain schools.

22 Responses to Big East To ESPN: We’ll Have A Look Around

  1. Devin says:

I have noticed that since the Louisville Cardinals broke the top 10 in football. That the Espn network will only do the top 5 in college football. When I use to look at the bottom of the screen it was showing the top ten. Now since the cards broke the top ten it doesn’t. Wtf!

  2. ROADRUNNER says:

@Dave of Watertown NOT A CHANCE!!.Ill take that bet ALL DAY..bring two cases of Coors to my tail gait ..Thankyou Very much!!!

  3. ROADRUNNER says:

Artie and the Neaderthal that agrees with him( lay off the UCONNJACK DUDE ..I thought you had more brain cells then that Artie!! How simplistic….marketing not ur thing huh?? How did UCONN Basketball go from non-exsistant to a MAJOR PLAYER ?? Because why?? They ARE a MAJOR PLAYER right Artie?? You probably think they started off like the GEORGETOWNS, DUKE, UCLA’s of the college basketball scene then huh?? ..I was in San Antonio during the NCAA tournament “Dream Season” (Scott Burrell/ Tate George) and the people there thought OUR HUSKIES were the ones from Washington State…UCONN?? Really??…so Focus Artie its the same for ALL the programs that will be part of the new BIG EAST ..North South East and West in some huge TV markets..that’s the “Huge National Footprint” ..and with success where will that take the league??? UCONN Basketball didnt start off with premier players did they?? They grew !!..

  4. ROADRUNNER says:

Jack54..come-on dude..Hockey??? Not the same product…hockey??..were u following the Whalers when they were here?? No offense, but at one point UCONN’s woman’s basketball had more fans in the seats at the games and higher Nielson ratings then the Whalers…so Keep the argument “apples to apples” not apples to bananas..

  5. jack54 says:

The BE aligning with NBC/Sports reminds me of the NHL leaving ESPN and signing with Verses TV. We were told it would be a big move forward.Look how that turned out. Some sort of deal with FOX might be the best option. More room for growth.

  6. Raymond Martineau/Ohio says:

Out of all the schools that will come to the big east wich one will be a big draw. Unfortunately no one in the current big east draws big either. TV is big for any school. TV helps with recruiting. Frustrating is the word of the day.

  7. husky66 says:

what exactly did the BE do to ESPN to make them act the way they have? In particular, the “behind the scenes” deal w/ the ACC to take Pitt and Syracuse? we know there was a TV deal the conference turned down, apprently pushed by the Pitt President and the deposed idiot BC AD comments about espn contolling the decision. There had to be something else that drove espn to be such jerks to the BE.

  8. Artie A... says:

Wow, I for one can’t wait to see the HUGE NATIONAL FOOTPRINT the new conference that compares to no other will bring.

Did ND, USC, LSU or a few others come on board when I was not looking?

  9. Dave from Watertown says:

    Extremely dumb decision.

When the Big East can get no offers, they will come crawling back to ESPN but ESPN will offer a revised, lowball take it or leave it offer.

  10. UConnJack says:

Regarding ESPN, one of the things that continues to haunt me is the statement that Gene DeFilippo made to a Boston newspaper in an interview. I’m paraphrasing here, but essentially he stated to them, as a reason for opposing UConn’s invitation to the ACC, that it was ESPN who “urged the ACC to shelve UConn in favor of Pitt”. Many of you will recall that both ESPN and the ACC quickly denied those comments, and DeFilippo was “forced” to retract the comments himself. But does anyone out there not believe that it was ESPN who was pulling the strings on that move? As Des Connor said, “Loyalty”?

  11. TAD says:

GREAT COMMENT ROADRUNNER. I stopped watching ESPN execpt when UCONN is on a while back. They continue to tell us how strong the ACC is in football even though the facts belie that statement in order to promote that conference while doing everything in its power to hurt the Big East even though they have a contract with the Big East. NBC with love to be in competition with ESPN with its 24 hr sports station. I think there are great potential for that station and the Big East if a contract can be worked out.

  12. ROADRUNNER says:

Hey Rich..you work for ESPN?…Competition is the American Way…I think ESPN has become so arrogant and lacks “VISION” that I believe that eventually they will be their own demise…The NFL renewed ther TV rights with CBS NBC and FOX…ESPN is not even in the back seat or the same car with them, as a matter of speaking. $$$$$ is generated by adverertising and viewership. And with the expansion of the League, The Big East will have a “HUGE” National Footprint. What does that mean? “OPPORTUNITY” The fans of those schools are in some pretty large TV markets. Not everyone is watching SEC matchups..and quite honestly, Its not just entirely about the TEAM, its about the fans and how the network creatively markets and packages the product for viewership. “Game DAY ” on ESPN isnt the “holy grail” to College football …they may have coined the term however..that was just their market strategy..Effective yes but will to get “OLD”… I’m sure the Networks that are the “Heavy Hitters” can out manuever and eventually take over broadcasting college footbal since their Pockets are much deeper, they have the marketing/packaging prowess and the NFL in their corner. I’m sure you know that the NFL and the networks that broadcast them enjoy the $$$$$ that is generated, more so then any other sport. So, if you think there isn’t a truck load of money waiting for them…think again. The old “BIG EAST” as we knew it is gone, yes sad, but with crumbling cities…there is ALWAYS OPPORTUNITIES to BUILD IT BIGGER AND BETTER. THE POTENTIAL for the HUGE NATIONAL FOOTPRINT the new conference will have compares to no other. It will be “INNOVATIVE , NON-TRADITIONAL” And quite honestly, THAT strategy and market will suck in new fans/players from such a variety of regions. The players they may attract may be the type that want to slay the dragon(SEC)..It will be such a DIVERSIFIED CONFERENCE WITH SO MANY DIFFERENT GEOGRAFIC REGIONS AND WITH THAT NEW FANS , ATHELETES, AND GROWING NIELSON RATINGS WHICH EQUALS GREATER ADVERTISING $$$$ which means what ?? SEE-YA ESPN(Espcially Stupid Programming Network..And when that happens Connecticut will have some “PRIVATE MEETINGS” and take AWAY YOUR TAX INCENTIVES and SEND YOU PACKING TO ANOTHER STATE….now that Exciting !!!

  13. Dave says:

The one good thing out there NBC sports network really needs programing. That could work out in the Big East favor. Screw ESPN CT should kick them out of the state with all there tax breaks. Bloodsuckers!

  14. Steve-CT says:

There is a belief, or thought process, in the business world that “Sometimes No Deal is the Best Deal” – let’s wait and see what come of the process.

  15. Rich G. says:

I’m sure ESPN is more than happy to agree to go ahead and look around cause I don’t know who the BE thinks is waiting with truck loads of money. Whether NBC or anyone else actually wants these games the BE will be lucky to get half of what these other leagues have been getting. I can’t imagine there being a bidding war over the rights to possibly air San Diego St vs Temple but apparently the BE believes there is. Does the BE realize they will be completely irrelevant in football in 2 years? For now UConn remains stuck with this mess.

  16. Frank says:

It seems like the conference should have accepted the Marinatto deal. That deal would have brought UConn $13.8 million. The most optimistic new deal brings just $8.8 million.

    • Stephen says:

It seems that way, but the article is deceptive. The $13.8 million is arrived by using $130 million and using 8 football schools (and 10 hoops only) as was the case then. BUT the league was going to expand. So the article (if it was not disingenuous) should have taken that into consideration. Later on, 14 football schools are used to make the calculations, so the amounts come out smaller (and ESPN paints the BE stupid).

It was not the BE plan to add all these schools, and thus create more pieces of the pie. The article makes it seem like the BE “screwed” up, but in fact ESPN broke up the league in order to “punish” them for not accepting what would have been a small payout per football school, once expansion was taken into account.
