by Categorized: notes Tagged: , Date:

What’s goin on?

UConn senior defensive end B.J. McBryde was the guest speaker at the West Middle School graduation exercises at the Asylum Hill Boys and Girls Club in Hartford Thursday. You’ll read more about that shortly here or at courant.com but wanted to address this now.

Again, the first thing you will notice with the players now is how their bodies have changed. What a transformation going on up there. I saw Tim Boyle last month in Middletown. He’s now built like a tight end.

I haven’t seen anything like this in so short a period of time…

Anyway, McBryde told me he started spring practice at 324 pounds now he’s at 290…

What’s goin on folks?

You may remember a story we did on Joe McCormick in 2012, believed to be the oldest living UConn football alum at the time at 100.

Just got the word Joe passed away on Thursday… He was a good man who accomplished a lot in his lifetime and did an awful lot for a lot of people.

Well done, Joe…. Time to rest.

Here are statements on McCormick’s passing from Larry McHugh, chairman of the Board of Trustees at UConn and school president Susan Herbst… Continue reading

Steelers And Former UConn Receiver Kashif Moore: “I Believe In Coach Diaco”

by Categorized: notes Tagged: , , , , Date:

What’s goin on?

Talked to Kash today for a bigger story down the road.

He was on campus this week as part of a panel of former players talking to current players about tradition and the like - the kinds of things new head coach Bob Diaco and Ernest Jones, running backs coach/player engagement, told us were going to happen because they are important to the program.

Moore said there was also some talk about doing something special for the fifth anniversary of Jasper “Jazz’ Howard’s passing – something Moore is really excited about, of course. He said the memory of his close friend should never be forgotten and that it too, is a part of UConn football.

Moore said both of those things alone along with meeting Diaco and talking with him and the staff have him very much looking forward to future of the program. Continue reading

QB Chandler Whitmer Says He Is Returning To Storrs To Compete

by Categorized: notes Tagged: , , Date:

No matter what you think of Chandler Whitmer’s play you’ve got to appreciate his willingness and desire to compete. Most competitors would.

What’s goin on?

I last saw Chandler Whitmer minutes before new UConn Coach Bob Diaco was set to be introduced and in looking at him and talking with him too it didn’t seem like the young man, a redshirt junior transfer from Butler (Kan.) CC was coming back. He ended the season third on the depth chart after losing his job to true freshman Tim Boyle after four games but it was redshirt freshman Casey Cochran who lit the place up in the final three games of the season, all wins, something Whitmer had not done for the Huskies to this season.

Whitmer graduated in December. The Huskies still have Kivon Taylor who will be a redshirt freshman and Logan Marchi is coming in true this season. Whitmer saw it all and he truly was see-sawing between returning.

The one thing that has been a constant with Whitmer is his competitive spirt. And I know he wants to win but there’s a serous fire that burns within Whitmer and apparenly Diaco appealed to it because Whitmer told me – after speaking with the new UConn coach again recently – without hesitation and with a lot of excitement Saturday that he’s coming back to Storrs. Huskies In The NFL Playoffs

The Indianapolis Colts (11-5) are hosting the Kansas City Chiefs (11-5) in an AFC Wild Card game today at 4:35 p.m. on NBC.

Running back Donald Brown and cornerback Darius Butler will be in action for the Colts. Both were members of UConn’s highly-celebrated four-member NFL Draft class in 2009.G Donald Thomas, a member of the 2008 class, is on the squad, too but has been out most of the season with a quadriceps injury.

John Dorsey, the Chiefs’ general manager, has done an excellent job in his chair. As you know Dorsey was a linebacker at UConn from 1980-83. One of his first moves was acquiring fullback Anthony Sherman  The Tank is in his third season in the league.

San Diego Chargers end Kendall Reyes, his second year in the league, rolls ‘em up against the Bengals Sunday at 1:05 on CBS. The Chargers are 9-7; Bengals 11-5.
