What’s goin on?

Well first off, Tom Myers says right off the bat his mother and father (Peggy and Norm) playing womens’ basketball and football respectively at UConn in the 1980s had nothing to do with his decision to become a Husky.

“To be honest, if my parents hadn’t gone to UConn I probably still would have picked UConn,” Myers said by phone a short time ago. “I just loved the school. I mean I really loved it. My parents going there wasn’t a factor.”

Let’s talk about the factors: Academics? Checked out. Athletics? Checked out.

How about this factor: the relationship between staff and player.

Myers camped at UConn earlier this month but he also camped at UConn a couple of years ago.

He said, at the time, there was really no tracking of him by the UConn coaching staff although he was familiar with Jon Wholley (linebackers), Matt Cersosimo (receivers), Hank Hughes (Assistant head coach and line coach) and Mike Foley (now tight ends).

“When Coach [Paul] Pasqualoni came I’d say that’s when things started to pick up,” Myers said. “They were on me quite a bit since last football season, especially Coach [George] DeLeone, who was recruiting me.”

Temple and Fordham had offered Myers scholarships. He said he looked at Rutgers a little bit too but staying home, he said, was a win-win.

“I’m close to my family and friends, they can come and see me play and I’m staying at home to play,” Myers said.
