BCS Presidential Oversight Committee Announces Creation of a new Post-Season Format
Four-Team, Seeded Playoff
Semi-Final Games to be Played in the Bowls, Championship Game to be Played at Neutral Site
Washington, D.C. – The group of university presidents who oversee college football’s Bowl Championship Series agreed today to launch a new four-team, seeded post-season playoff to determine the national collegiate champion. The new format will begin with the 2014-2015 season.
“We recognize that the BCS has been controversial in some years, but we also believe it has turned college football from a regional sport into a wonderfully popular national sport, much to the benefit of our alumni, student-athletes and fans,” the twelve members of the BCS Presidential Oversight Committee said in a joint statement. “We now seek to build an even better college football season by creating a four-team playoff to crown the national champion, while protecting the regular season and the bowl experience. We’re delighted to support this format and congratulate the group of conference commissioners who have done so much for college football and who worked so hard to make this happen.”
The group of presidents also endorsed:
•
Rotation of the semifinal games among six bowl sites and rotation of the championship game among neutral sites. The championship game will be managed by the conferences and will not be branded as a bowl game.
•
Creation of a selection committee that will rank the teams to play in the playoff, giving all the teams an equal opportunity to participate. Among the factors the committee will value are win-loss record, strength of schedule, head-to-head results, and whether a team is a conference champion.
The POC also decided to:
•
Enhance college football by playing the semifinals New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day. The date of the first semifinal games will be either Wednesday, December 31, 2014, or Thursday, January 1, 2015.
•
Create “Championship Monday” by setting the date of the championship game on the first Monday in January that is six or more days after the final semi-final game is played. As a result, in the first five years the championship game will be played on Monday, January 12, 2015; Monday, January 11, 2016; Monday, January 9, 2017; Monday, January 8, 2018; and Monday, January 7, 2019.
•
Plan the new format to cover a twelve-year term, from the 2014-2015 season through the 2025-2026 season.
•
Distribute revenue from games in a manner that remains under discussion. Generally speaking the concept would (1) reward conferences for success on the field (2) accommodate teams’ expenses (3) acknowledge marketplace factors and (4) reward academic performance of student-athletes.
•
Eliminate the “automatic qualification” designation.
Among additional matters to be decided later are the name of the new event; the composition of and procedures for the selection committee; the final funding formula; and which bowls will participate as rotating hosts of semi-final playoff games.
The decision is subject to passage of appropriate legislation by the NCAA Board of Directors to permit the two semifinal winners to play an additional post-season game.
“We are very pleased with this new arrangement,” the presidents said. “College football’s championship game is America’s second most watched sporting event and we’re proud to build on our successes as we grow the sport and hear the voices of everyone who loves college football.”

call a spade, a spade here. the committee is in place to bring the 4 teams together that can bring tickets, interest, ratings (IE money).
So basicly Uconn goes into every season only competing for a Big East Championship and a weak bowl.I could see this lowering intrest in Div1A football there are 120 teams but only a third have a shot.I think ticket sales and ratings could take a big hit from this.My opinion we need a bigger playoff system.I like 8 teams however having a system where every Conference winner in Div1A football gets a playoff shot would give everyone a chance and really show who is the best
Dez – Wondering if you can provide some insight. It is a bit unclear to me. Under this format, how do the Rose Bowl (PAC12 vs B10) and the new “Champions Bowl” (SEC vs. BIG12) fit in? With the new top 4-team playoff, I can’t see alot of these 4 conference champs ever playing in either one of those bowls, especially the SEC champ. Am I missing something?
Well HCPP has plenty of time to build this program up since we, along with the rest of the BE and plenty of others, are completely irrelevant for the next 12 years or so. Not what us or the league really needed to help move things forward.
Your right Dez, six or eight teams and you would not have an arguement by anybody. Selection committee scares me though.
Committee key
DC my man, its not prefect but its a start! I am happy that they created this playoff system and like that the committee will take all matters into consideration. I am just concerned at who is going to be on this committee. Love the NYE or NYD semifinals but can really do without a Monday night Championship game. Game starts way too late and Tuesday morning sucks! I also dont like that the format will be worked out for twelve years because that seems like an awfully long time until they want to expand it. We shall see how this goes but like I said, its a start!
Yeah. I guess it’s ok but the way it stands now if you’re in the Big East you’re going to have to win the league title same as always but now your non-conference schedule has to be a monster: gonna have to get monsters who want to play you and vice versa, but when? Where? Lot of hoops to jump through here. It’s a start, hardly perfect but from here they should be able to figure out what’s fair to everyone in 12 years. Bottom line selection committee is huge. I would have liked to have seen 6 or 8 teams here though
Dez – What’s sad is that I’m going to be an old man before any changes can be made. I guess we have to live with it for awhile and it is better than it was. Based on your comments, do you think this system will have a definite negative impact on Big East recruiting?
Tough for Big East. Remember no one respects the conference so the non conference has to be incredibly strong, stronger than its been for everybody to get respect but who plays BE teams now? What motivation would an SEC team play a BE team? How could a BE team schedule an SEC game under new setup, same for Big Ten, Pac-12, Big 12. Some will get games, UConn had Tennessee and Michigan down the road but thats not going to be enough.
