Huskies Should Be Fine At Safety, Young Though
With the dismissal of starting safety Jerome Junior being announced by the school this morning we take a look at where the Huskies stand at the position and possible replacements.
First, Ty-Meer Brown, a 6 foot 192-pound redshirt sophomore wound up getting seven starts because of the knee injury to Blidi Wreh-Wilson but the kid showed he could play from his very first start at West Virginia. It was a tough start but Brown had a pretty good finish to the season. It’s likely he’ll remain a starter.
Who joins him?
Byron Jones, also a redshirt sophomore was outstanding starting out at safety, was outstanding at corner when Blidi went down and was outstanding special teams. You know he’s going to be in the mix.
Redshirt freshman Wilbert Lee out of Boys And Girls High in Brooklyn has good size (6 foot, 202). He should be up for an opportunity as well as junior Gilbert Stlouis who played in seven games last season.
And then there’s the three safeties coming this summer, freshmen, that this coaching staff recruited all with good size for the position (note: Bios plucked from UConn website):
Jordan Floyd, 6-1, 205, Bel Air, Md: Named to All-Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association team.. named all-state honorable mention by the Baltimore Sun and was a second team All-Metro pick in 2010..as a junior had 700 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns and also had 70 tackles..played in the 2011 Maryland Crab Bowl on December 17 for the Baltimore team… also plays basketball and runs track and field in the 100-meter and 200-meter dash… born April 19, 1994.
Ellis Marder, 6-1, 185 Windermere, Fla: 2011 Central Florida all-star..Played defensive back in high school… team played in regional semifinals of Class 4A championship… born January 14, 1994. Of course we also know about Marder is that coaches were ringing is phone the night before signing day hoping to change his mind in favor of their school.
Obi Melifonwu, 6-3, 194, South Grafton, Mass: Played both running back and defensive back in high school… rushed for 1,394 yards in senior year with 17 touchdowns… made 14 tackles on defense and had three interceptions..also had ten two-point conversions… named to the ESPN Boston All-State team… rushed for 320 yards and three touchdowns in a win over Leichester in 2011..is also a long jumper and triple jumper on the track team… born April 5, 1994.

Dez – Thanks for keeping us informed. Much appreciated.
I believe the staff moved Gilbert St. Louis to S as well
And I’m almost positive I mentioned him in the post to which you’re referring.
oops, you did. It’s that darned reading comprehension that kept me from getting better scores on my SAT. Sorry,
Ha! Me, too!!!!
Another sad day for UCONN pointy ball.
Sad to think a 5th year senior would have a behavior problem. We can only hope this young man finds his way on the field or at least in the classroom and completes his education.
I wish JJ all the luck in the world but wish he could have finished his passion and education here…
