Mailbag April 6: Thoughts On QB Race?

by Categorized: Mailbag Tagged: , Date:

Q: Dez, what’s good? From what I have gathered from your spring reports, it looks like Whitmer has taken the early lead in the QB battle and has the highest upside for this year. Nebrich has improved and will battle McCummings for the wildcat package. McCentee has definitely come in with a competitive spirit. Cochran looks good but could benefit from the redshirt year. Any thoughts? Thanks for the fantastic coverage and all the work you do! Can’t wait for April 21st. – Jason, East Haddam

A: What’s good Jason? I’d say it looks like Whitmer is getting up to speed and is really a good quarterback. McEntee is trimmer and throwing the ball better, too. Cochran is a true student of the game, picks up stuff fast, he’s tough and rarely looks like a freshman. McCummings is a great physical specimen at the position and because of his ability I’d say he probably has the greatest upside of any of them and Nebrich is close. I’d hate to have to be the one to pick the starter but based on what’s in camp you’re gonna have to feel good about who he will be.

Dez, I know it is early yet, but as they say, “hope springs eternal.”
Last year when the quarterbacks were all even and fighting it out, my feeling was that they might just all be average, at best. This year, I have the feeling they are pretty even, because there is some real talent there.

Has McEntee improved that much? Does he have the tallent to improve to a high 1-A level?
