Q: Dez,  I’m trying to piece together a couple of statements made by Commissioner Marinatto in the Navy announcement and Coach P on signing day.  Marinatto pointedly said that the BE is not done addressing expansion in both football and basketball.  Coach P mentioned adding another team to balance out the western division.  Does that point to adding Memphis or do you think the BE may actually go to 14, adding someone in the west for football only (I know you prefer USAF) and also Memphis and Temple for all sports?  I’d appreciate your thoughts as where this may be going. – Joe, Meriden

A: I think the coach was talking a team from the West as in possibly Air Force or out that way  but we probably need to wait a bit and revisit this after the West Virginia mess gets cleared Joe. That’s center-stage right now, it will affect how things are going with expansion (you see the league trying to push Boise in quicker, perhaps to fill the gap WVU is going to leave), and has to be dealt with ASAP but yes I like Air Force and or BYU but this WVU thing – when exactly is it leaving? – is going to be a problem, especially if it’s this season which I don’t think is out of the realm of possibility from what I’m hearing but we’ll see.

WVU is not making a lot of friends right now. Not impressesed with the integrity or business acumen from Oliver Luck. That mess really needs to be straightened out before we get to spring ball.

I think it’s pretty clear that WVU has no intent playing in the Big East this year and I tend to believe that will be the case. So really, the Big East needs to just settle this, get their money, and move forward. I know this leads to a slippery slope with Syracuse, Pitt, and future teams that may leave (Louisville, Cincy, UConn….?). However, this needs to end and it’s clear WVU will not be playing a game in the Big East, no matter what a judge says.

Memphis? There is no value in adding this school. None. Same with Temple. If they do add these teams it’s just a glorified MAC or C-USA. Let’s all hope this insn’t the case.

    • Steve B says:

Without WV isn’t the BE already a glorified MAC or C-USA? They should probably take who they can get at this point.

    • Steve B says:

I’m on a roll? What’s exactly wrong with my statement? You’re telling me the 7 teams that will be left in the BE aren’t on the same level as the MAC or CUSA? I’d say looking at the past few seasons that are right on par with each other (take away the bogus BCS bid).

      • Navin R. Johnson says:

Steve B…I agree to a point. The Big east is average and can contend with all of the other AQ schools mid level teams. they are better than C-USA or MAC. That is why adding Memphis or Temple just makes the Big East deeper with teams instead of better. Adding AF or BYU (two national teams with followings) makes the conference better.

DC…I’m well.Busy with work and ready for spring ball. Can’t wait.

Just a couple of points here Dez for those always bashing some of the schools like Temple. First where were we before joining the BE? Any school coming in is going to improve their recruiting just as we did.
In our last six meetings with Temple we are 3&3 our wins were by an average of 7 points with Temples wins being by an average of 25 points. Our most recent game (2010) was a loss 30-16 if they are just a glorified MAC or C-USA team what does that make us?
Many should remember Temple was accepted into the BE before UCONN going D-1 pushed them out. Just say’n…..

    • Steve says:

Good points Artie, only thing that needs clarification is Temple wasn’t “accepted” as a member of the Big East, they were football only members from 1991-2004.

    • UCFBfan says:

I agree with your points. I think Temple needs to be added as a full member because they bring value in basketball more than football. However, I can’t see Villanova being ok with that. I don’t see any value in adding any more FB only schools. It’s that exact logic that has torn this conference apart.

  5. Navin R. Johnson says:

Good point here Artie but if the Big East wants to get stronger and not deeper they need a team like AF or BYU.
