SEC Coaches, Especially Alabama Coach Nick Saban, Squawking About Proposed Playoff Setup
This from Jon Solomon at al.com and the Birmingham News via the SEC spring meetings in Destin, Fla….
In Solomon’s piece Alabama Coach Nick Saban is quoted as saying…
” So now we’re going to mess that up by saying you’ve got to be a conference champion. I think somebody is a little bit self-absorbed in worr”ying about how it affects them and how they can best get somebody in the game all the time.”
Now let’s see what happens since the big boys are on record.

Hey DC…Did my comment get pulled??
Not that I know of
I agree with the 8 team playoff..There are definitely storied programs with long histories out there..but there several conferences and programs who are growing and can be just as competitive and equally deserve to have a chance at playing for a National Championship just like Gozaga did a few years ago in basketball. I can think of four power house basketball conferences…and the SEC isnt one of them.(they just have Kentucky)..should they be excluded from the mix ?? should the Basketball tournament changed to accommodate the top four coferences ?? This is America “EQUAL OPPORTUNITY FOR ALL” Ohhh…I forgot, historically, the south fought against and isnt fond of that idea..I’m sure, at some point, Muschamps comments will truly be recognized as FEAR..and justice in college football will prevail….
Last day of recruiting today, any chance you will be interviewing a coach to see how we did and what the future holds?
SEC will get what they want…count on it.
true and this is what is wrong with college football…
My brain hurts when I think about stuff like this, but it should be simple, shouldn’t it? An 8 team playoff makes much more sense to me. In a 4 team playoff, if they take conference champions, the first year that a SEC team is ranked say #2 and doesn’t get in, the whole thing falls apart. Seems to me that with 8, they could take the 4 conf. champs (SEC, B10, B12, Pac12) and 4 at large teams. That allows the almighty ND to stay ND, and even could give the ACC/BE a ticket into the tourney in years when their champ(s) are ranked highly enough. (I don’t think it should be automatic for those leagues, but it shouldn’t be impossible for them to ever play in the playoff either). It’s the fairest and I think it has the potential to deliver truckloads of money. But this is college football. As long as the 20 or so powerhouses are making money, why would they do anything that makes any sense for the good of the sport?
Love it – Nate
DC my man, I have always felt that the balance of college football has always gone the way that the big boys have wanted. I know that that is stating the obvious. The Big Boys say “jump” and the NCAA or the BCS say “how high?” Now with this little quip from All Holy Saban and everyone will be in a tizzy about how the playoff format is not fair. Saban is crying because if this format had been in place this year, he would not have been in the dance and that scares the crap out of him. His lively hood relies on championships delivered, not just how many bowls he makes. I am interested to see if they back off this current proposal, which actually works FOR THE GREATER GOOD, not just the SEC, Big 12 or PAC whatever it is called now.
Way to hit it Frank
Here is the ESPN piece on what the SEC wants. They want the top 4 in the country, not the 4 conference champs because according to Will Muschamp “we may have the four best teams in the country” This is what irritates me about NCAA Football. Basketball takes the conference champs and then at large bids. Why does it have to be the way the one powerhouse conference wants? Yes, I know its all about money and attendance but having a playoff with the four conference champs and the possibly 2 or 3 at large bids is the way it should be! If you want to make it, win your league!

Muschamp’s quote is really disturbing especially with the movement towards larger conferences and more conference games. With fewer and fewer out of conference games, there will be less and less reference to compare relative strengths between the conferences. We have also seen more and more movement towards the few ooc games that are left, being simply used as money makers to ensure an extra couple home games.
How will we know that the SEC is that much better of a conference if they play fewer and fewer teams from “middle” level conferences, and add in the fact those teams don’t want to play anywhere except at home.
