What’s going on?

UConn defeated Rutgers 28-17 Saturday.

Here’s the report card, how the Huskies graded out, one man’s opinion, from that effort…

Line: Held the Rutgers rushing attack to 68 yards. Five Huskies had tackles for loss including the continuously emerging Tim Willman who had one for minus 7. They didn’t generate any sacks Saturday but the Huskies owned the line of scrimmage here.  B Continue reading

What’s goin on?

Daniel covers Rutgers for NJ.Com…

Q: I’m going to assume UConn will be motivated to play this game with an opportunity to spoil Rutgers’ postseason chances. Will Rutgers be motivated to play?

A: It’s hard to imagine Rutgers won’t be motivated for this game. Coach Kyle Flood said the off-field issues were a distraction against Cincinnati, but that excuse has expired. The coaches and players haven’t had to answer any questions this week about the bullying allegations former player Jevon Tyree made against defensive coordinator Dave Cohen. The focus for the Scarlet Knights has to be on the opportunity to save their season. They aren’t going to meet the expectations they had earlier in the season, but they can clinch their eighth bowl appearance in nine years with a win on Saturday. If that isn’t a motivating factor, this team has bigger problems than any of us imagined. Continue reading

Defensive end Tim Willman had a tremendous game with two of the sacks and he also recovered two fumbles. He got a mitt on a short pass he would have been in position to take to the house last week against SMU. He’s a playmaker. He’s making plays. Temple had a total of 92 yards rushing. What’s goin on?

Here’s my report card off the UConn-SMU game in which the Mustangs defeated the Huskies 38-21 behind a strong effort from Mustangs senior quarterback Garrett Gilbert who completed 33 of 52 for 353 yards and four touchdowns.

Line: Not bad. I thought senior defensive ends Tim Willman and Jesse Joseph balled out – uh, gave it everything they had – Ruben Frank, too. Willman had one of the two sacks on SMU quarterback Garrett Gilbert. Shamar Stephen, the senior tackle was pretty active and had the other sack. The line got good pressure – just not enough at the right times. C plus
