UConn Defense Has Been Trying To Help The UConn Offense Quite A Bit This Preseason, Too

What’s goin on’?

How is the UConn defense helping the offense right now?

Well if you think aboiut all the looks/coverages it’s been seeing the defense trying to master, of which there are many, if the offense sees those coverages or anything like them from opponents during the regular season it should help the unit…right?

“It’s the best thing,” said Shane Day, UConn quarterbacks coach. “Because as a quarterback, when you go into a season, you’re going to play 12 opponents and you’re going to see a plethora of covergaes so when our defense gives us all the different looks against each play then we can go through and teach all the different looks.

“If they only play one coverage…like, for example last year. We were more, primarily, a man team so we didn’t get a lot of off corners or different coverages so we knew where to go with the ball vs. man [defense] but when we played teams that didn’t play man we were a little bit behind. This year, we’ve seen everything. We know where to go with the ball against every coverage which is good.”

We shall soon see.

The UConn Football season opens a week from today against Towson University (Rentschler Field, 7:30 p.m.).

What’s goin on?

Talked to UConn quarterbacks coach Shane Day and offensive coordinator T.J. Weist for a story you’ll see this weekend, I’m guessing.

Weist is beginning his first season with the Huskies. Day, however, is in his third season as UConn quarterbacks coach so he knows much more about the situation and the players involved, including junior Scott McCummings.

McCummings, unlike junior Chandler Whitmer and redshirt freshman Casey Cochran, is a dual threat-type but Day said the focus since he arrived has been on making  McCummimngs more of a complete quarterback.   Continue reading

Recruiting: The Big QB

What’s goin on?

Hope all are safe and doing safe things…

UConn head coach Paul Pasqualoni got 6 foot 4 Tim Boyle from Xavier High in Middletown and 6-5 Kivon Taylor out of Grady High in Atlanta. The Huskies received a commitment from 6-5 Richard Lagow, of Plano (Tx.) but there hasn’t been announcement regarding his signing.

The Huskies have 6-2 junior Scott McCummings on the roster along with 6-1 Chandler Whitmer who stared last year and 6 foot Casey Cochran who will be a redshirt  freshman.

So, as of now, the Huskies will have five quarterbacks competing  in the fall, maybe six. Half will be 6-4 or taller.

“At the position, we’ve got Chandler, who is an older guy, so he’s obviously developing and already next year going to be in his junior year and well along academically and we had a chance in Timmy and we had a chance …with the players we were recruiting to get a bigger, taller, version, if you noticed, the guys we took are not the same from a profile standpoint,” Pasqualoni said on national signing day Wednesday Continue reading
