McCummings Out For Season

by Categorized: Roster Tagged: , Date:

UConn junior Scott McCummings, recently switched from quarterback to wide receiver, was lost for the season Sunday after tearing his Achilles Tendon the school announced on twitter.

The Huskies opened practice Friday and were in the midst of practice No.3 Sunday.

McCummings, who gained over 30 pounds since 2012 preseason camp and was up to 257 on the school’s most recent depth chart, was moved to receiver for a chance at more opportunities to play not to mention losing some of the weight he gained.

McCummings came to UConn as dual threat quarterback from Natick, Mass., and was redshirted in 2010. Former UConn head coach Randy Edsall had a vision of building the offense around McCummings’ abilities in the future but Edsall left for Maryland after the 2010 season and Paul Pasqualoni replaced him and the UConn with a pro style offense in mind first.

He still wanted to use McCummings at times as a wildcat-type option but the attempts at it over the past two seasons didn’t yield enough positive results to commit to incorporating the scheme down the road.

McCummings was 6 of 12 for 155 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for 417 yards and seven scores over the past two seasons.

And, subsequently, the Huskies have recruited heavy at quarterback and they’re all versed in the pro style attack.

Pasqualoni said McCummings wasn’t out of the mix at quarterback but thought he could help the team at receiver with his knowledge of the offense and because he could catch the ball.

What’s goin on?

Talked to UConn quarterbacks coach Shane Day and offensive coordinator T.J. Weist for a story you’ll see this weekend, I’m guessing.

Weist is beginning his first season with the Huskies. Day, however, is in his third season as UConn quarterbacks coach so he knows much more about the situation and the players involved, including junior Scott McCummings.

McCummings, unlike junior Chandler Whitmer and redshirt freshman Casey Cochran, is a dual threat-type but Day said the focus since he arrived has been on making  McCummimngs more of a complete quarterback.   Continue reading

Let’s get at it….

We got to speak with reserve sophomore – No.1 wildcat – QB Scott McCummings today.

The Courant first reported he rejoined the Huskies over the weekend after being excused from camp for personal reasons by head coach Paul Pasqualoni.

“I was at home dealing with some problems with the family and stuff…It was pretty..I don’t know I don’t really want to get into it but coach Pasqualoni was very understanding, let me come back and it feels good to be back,” McCummings said after practice Tuesday
