What’s goin on?

UConn vs. USF Saturday, noon Rentschler Field…

We’ll tag a list of visitors, all unofficial and most for the Class of 2015, at the end. First here’s a look at what we did this week.

Today’s story features a conversation with UConn womens’ basketball coach Geno Auriemma, an avid football fan, who believes the football team deserves more support, win lose or draw. It’s my understanding he’s always had strong feeling about the issue and now he’s gone on the record. Aside from this, football aside, he’s a great man to talk to. I tweeted earlier this week that he’s good for the head and he is. He’s really gifted that way.

Anyway, here’s today’s notebook leading with some thoughts from Geno

Here’s a nice story on the EBV program at UConn..

Here’s another with defensive line coach and defensive coordinator Hank Hughes who has been with three different head coaches in his 13 seasons and in this tough situation his defense is going to have to come through Continue reading

What’s goin on?

Here’s the UConn football depth chart for this week’s home game against South Florida (Noon, SNY). Notable changes include Kamal Abrams’ return.

Abrams sustained a knee injury during warmups in the seeason opener against Towson, perhaps a sign of things to come in that one…who knows. Anyway, he’s starting opposite Geremy Davis (19 receptions, 308 yards ) which means Shak Phillips (15×255, three touchdowns) isn’t starting. He’s not listed on this week’s depth chart at all. if he doesn’t play it would be the third game the junior has missed since re-injuring his hamstring late in the 32-21 loss to Maryland in which he pulled up noticeably at the end of his 75-yard catch run for a touchdown.   Continue reading

Report Card: UConn Vs. South Florida

South Florida 13, UConn 6

Offense

Six points, 327 total yards, three turnovers on last three possessions and very likely a sore quarterback. Two weeks to prepare for the game.

Line: Just when you thought it couldn’t get any worse it did at South Florida. Four sacks on quarterback Chandler Whitmer? Nothing short of amazing the young man got up from some of the hits he took. The line should take more pride in protecting their QB. And forty-three yards on 31 carries? F

QB: Whitmer was 24 of 38 for 284 yards and two interceptions. He was while throwing the first pick deep and the one at the end of the game was kind of flukey, right? I thought so. I also think Whitmer is one tough customer, to get up from some of the hits he took? He’s a gamer and he tried. C Continue reading
