UConn Counseling Program Interim Director Ellen Tripp On AD Warde Manuel: “An Incredible Gift For Us”

by Categorized: Uncategorized Tagged: , , Date:

Just spoke with Ellen Tripp, interim directror for UConn’s Counseling Program, who since January added mens basketball to her title of academic counselor for womens basketball and football the last 11 years. I’m doing a story featuring Ellen and her role coming up in a few days. She said a lot of interesting things. And I mean a lot. This was mong them.

“We’re extremely lucky to be in an environment where we have, I mean having Warde [Manuel] come in as our athletic director has been an incredible gift for us,” Tripp said. “His commitment to academics is something that I haven’t seen here before and I’ve been here about 15 years. He meets individually with every student who is under a 2.0 GPA and talks to them about the reasons why and what their plan is and how he can help. He’s very involved in creating a strong academic culture here. It comes from the top.”

Also, did you know Manuel is reviewing recruit transcripts before admission?

UConn Athletic Director Warde Manuel Confirms Paul Pasqualoni’s Return For A Third Season, And A Word To Fans

by Categorized: Media Tagged: , , Date:

What’s goin on?

UConn athletic director Warde Manuel confirmed head football coach Paul Pasqualoni will return for a third season. I spoke with Manuel by phone a short time ago. Here’s some of what he said. Full story should be up online at courant.com shortly…

“Look, I saw a team that played up and down but played hard, never quit, wasn’t lack of effort,” Manuel said. “As I said earlier in the season, we need to improve on the mistakes. Coaches need to make better decisions all around and put them [players] in better positions. Everybody has to improve. In my conversations with Paul I know he’s working that, improving that. I know he understands what he needs to do to be better next season. So I totally expect we’ll make the adjustments we need; that we’ll recruit student-athletes that can come in and try to help us now where we need it and that we’ll develop the players that are coming back – all in an effort to ensure success on the field.” Continue reading

UConn AD Warde Manuel On Win Over Louisville

by Categorized: Uncategorized Tagged: , , Date:

Through The Courant’s John Altavilla UConn athletic director Warde Manuel talks about the football team win over No19 Louisville.

Manuel was at Paradise Jam with UConn women’s basketball team…

“It was a great win for the team. I thought they really showed great effort, tenacity and resolve, particularly in the second half,” Manuel said. “We weren’t moving the ball very well and they [Louisville] started to move it better. But we showed great resolve during the time when Louisville had the momentum. We kept fighting.

“I watched the entire game with several of our donors and fans. It made us very proud. It’s a game of emotion and in the end it was elation. I’m just glad that their efforts in practice, sticking together as a team and not breaking apart, whining and making excuses. They showed the ability that their effort helped them produce.”

UConn AD Warde Manuel On College Football Playoff, UConn’s Place, Scheduling And…Notre Dame?

by Categorized: Uncategorized Tagged: , , Date:

What’s goin on?

Lots to get at here so let’s do it…

I spoke to UConn athletic director Warde Manuel a few minutes ago to talk about the new college football playoffs decision, UConn’s place in it, beefing up the schedule, getting the program’s name out there more and building the fanbase, because all those things have to occur now. He talked about ways to do it  including being open to playing neutral site games and re-opening discussions with Notre Dame  -yes Notre Dame – about playing neutral site games (uh, no, there has been no change with Michigan next year. That game is a go at Rentschler Field. Manuel said he and Michigan AD Dave Brandon have spoken recently about it and both sides understand the game will and should be played at Rentschler Field so end of discussion on that one).

Here’s Manuel who is in meetings in Dallas….

On the playoff decision and what it means for UConn football?

“We’re going to have to play well enough and play good enough competition and strengthen our position in football and in the Big East; do our part to help strengthen the Big East conference as it relates to our competitive best in football across the country in order to get in. We’ll see how some of the details work out but it’s an exciting time ….exciting and at the same time we still have to figure out some of the details but we have to play ourselves in.”

What do you think is the best way for UConn to play itself in?

“Two things.. Continue reading
