The victories being vacated is meaningless. The money to fund programs for abused kids is meaningful and hopefully will be well spent. The big hurt is the scholarships. And the ability to transfer out. You know low life coaches already have their feelers out to the kids there.
Bash away at Paterno but are the values he felt so strongly about aren’t less true because he failed so badly. And have any of us really asked ourselves if the motive to protect the reputation of the univerity and FB are even valid? Think about it, they turn in Sandusky and while a bad initially, once its proven he is a pedophile they are heroes for having done the courageous thing. More likely they spoke to him directly, (by the way Curley did)and you know he told them he was being misunderstood by troubled boys. The believed him because they knew him and the DA didn’t do anything. (And by the way, that DA had a reputation for not being intimidated by anyone. He did however, have a history of manic/depression.) So is it so hard to believe that someone w/ a lifetime of integrity like Paterno just decided to believe the wrong thing? you bet. put yourself in Paterno’s spot. If a lifelong friend was suspected of pedophilia, would you immediately go to the authorities or would you go directly to your friend? Its possible and probable (Freeh’s “conclusions” aside) that Joe failed and so did the others, but don’t you have just a bit of doubt? Oh, by the way, the catholic church seems fine and they repeatedly protect pedophiles. Sports more important than religion? which gets more headlines?

I have no problem with the severe punishment of Pedophile State. The one I do have a bit of a problem with is vacating all the victories in order to keep the Pedo protector out of the record books.

Seeing as you can only strip a win from a school on paper only, could they not have done so with the coach and not the team?
You have hundreds of players that were good enough to play at a top D1 level, that had nothing to do with the crime, and they have to look back and say I never won a college football game.

Take it out on Joe not the players. They believed in him and what he sold. They should not be punished for something he hid from them. Invite them all to a ceremony where the statue will be melted down on the fifty yard line. The scrap bronze can be sold to help pay the soon to come law suits. Let the players keep the wins.

The NCAA looks foolish on this one.
Penn State 54 West Overshoe 6 Overshoe won!

Very sad that the NCAA didn’t do the right thing. They should have been shut down for 5 years. Lets all remember this was a university issue not just a football issue. This hurts them but they will recover.

I think the NCAA’s bold decision was right on. Other’s will argue it should have been worse, and others the opposite. You could debate the merits of either side ad nauseum, but that won’t change the decision. More importantly, I’m impressed that the NCAA had the foresight to act quicker than it ever has on a matter of such grave magnitude even though it didn’t have any real precedent to rely on. Unfortunately there will be some collateral damage to students and student-athletes, but that could be said of any college/university that suffers bowl bans, loss of scholarships, etc. for any sport. However, PSU obviously knew this was coming and understands it needs to act and act now to take steps that assure it remains relevant and ready to do what it right as an educational institution. The statements of the President, AD and head football coach are pretty indicative of that.

Gotta say while I thought the program should’ve been shut down for a few years (not one), these sanctions are pretty severe and will bury the program for the next decade. I hope the NCAA makes the right decision about allowing these kids to transfer. My recommendation would be to allow every school that is not on probation to allow 2 or 3 PSU kids to transfer in and not count towards the 85 scholarship limit for the first year.

Whether or not this is the appropriate punishment will depend if this brings real cultural change to PSU. A good start would be cleaning house from the president right on down through the BOT. Every single one of them needs to go.
