What’s goin on?

UConn head football coach Paul Pasqualoni just wrapped his post-UMass game press conference with local media.

Here are some of the highlights quickly…

Senior defensive end Teddy Jennings (left knee) will have be further evaluated through an MRI later this afternoon. Pasqualoni said he was optimistic but didn’t want to say anything more until he received the results.

(You know the Huskies are already down big DT Shamar Stephen. We should get an update on him next week).

Game balls went to the defense which held UMass to 59 total yards and kicker Chad Christen who made all three of his fields, connecting from 36, 47 and 19 yards…

- Pasqualoni planned to play a lot of players. There was a lot of jumbling on the offensive line, Pasqualoni sticking to his guns on having each lineman be adept at least two positions. Senior Adam Masters played three.

“We were encouraged that guys handled [being] in and out of the game in spots. If we keep working hard on it it will make us better.”

Freshman guard Tyler Samra was one of the young offensive linemen Pasqualoni wanted to see and he did. True freshman defensive end E.J. Norris, was another player Pasqualoni said he wanted to see…he played him, too.

Pasqualoni would have liked more production out of the running game but as I mentioned before give UMass some credit. Pasqualoni did.

“I thought UMass did a pretty good job against the run. That was confirmed here today,” he said.

On QB Chandler Whitmer: “I thought Chandler Whitmer did a good job in the pocket, liked the way he moved around and slid into the spot. His ball security was very good and threw some of the deeper balls, he did a good job. The first drive (ending in Lyle McCombs’ 1-yard TD run in the first quarter) was very good. He did make some good intermediate throws but we missed a couple that we can hit and do a better job with.”

Pasqualoni said he thought Scott McCummings (7×13) did a good job.

Definitely thought the wild cat disrupted the flow a bit. Otherwise excellent game.

Did anyone notice how many times Sio got his hands on the ball? One series I think he touched the ball 3 times in a row. INT’s on his finger tips…

Tell me why Chandler didn’t start, didn’t play a complete series? I like Scott Mccummings but if they need him in the game make him a running back he got some size, or a reciever or tailback, as a quarterback he takes to long to make a decision. If Chandler had been in the game full time in the first half Uconn would have been up 5 touch downs. Lets get an adult in the running back position, Mc flea just does not have the size or the speed. They have backs with the size and the speed use em. The Head coach we should have got was on the Umass side line. Pasquelone’s time has passed.

Sometimes I read a response and wonder if the writer is serious or trying to be sarcastic. Number 1, Chandler Whitmer was the starting QB. Lyle McCombs was a freshman All- American RB, so I guess he should be benched. The coach you think UConn should have hired just got beat 37 – 0, and his team gained a TOTAL of 59 yards. I just do not get some people. WOW.

you’re right in that the “wildcat” needs to stay on the bench. Let Chandler get into the flow of the game and he’ll score points

    • Steve says:

It’s unfair to criticize a gameplan against the likes of a UMass. There is no better game to try to get Scott some snaps in a real game situation (don’t forget he missed a good portion of the preseason as well). I do agree that chandler being in may have resulted in more points, but a win is a win and with the d the way they played extra points didn’t matter.

Instead of NC State preparing to defend against Chandlers style of play only they have to prepare against McCummings style of play also. McCummings is Coach Pauls long con, did you notice McCummings kept the ball an awful lot Thursday night, now why would you think that? Coach Paul is back home he is not going anywhere. ACC time!

      WHat an absurd comment.

  3. JD says:

    Great Defensive performance!

I thought the “O” struggled especially in the run game. Wildcat needs to be more effective.

Overall Solid performance, Next Sat will be exciting!

JD down here in Raleigh the Wolfpackers think they are going to win the ACC, and hey, that’s ok, we can and will beat them anyway, and then they could go ahead and do whatever they want!
