Here’s the release on it from the school…

Really like that Coach Paul Pasqualoni and UConn did this going into camp tomorrow …

UConn Athletic Communications – August 2, 2012 – QB Whitmer Named To No. 1 Spot On Depth Chart

STORRS, Conn. (August 2, 2012) – University of Connecticut head football coach Paul Pasqualoni has announced that redshirt-sophomore Chandler Whitmer (Newnan, Ga.) will be the No. 1 quarterback on the UConn depth chart as the Huskies begin preseason practice on Friday.
Whitmer enrolled at Connecticut for the spring 2012 semester and participated in spring practice. He has three years of eligibility at Connecticut. Whitmer originally enrolled at Illinois in the fall of 2010 and was a redshirt. He spent the 2011 fall semester at Butler Community College in El Dorado, Kansas and was 180 for 316 in the air for 3,022 yards with 25 TDs and 14 interceptions. He was named All-Kansas Junior College Conference first team honors and earned National Junior College Athletic Association All-American honorable mention. Butler was the second-ranked junior college team nationally in 2011.
Whitmer was named to The Champaign News-Gazette’s All-State team following his senior year of high school at Downers Grove (Ill.) South. He earned all state and all-area honors.
He was 18 of 27 in the air for 187 yards and two touchdowns in UConn’s Blue-White Spring Football game on April 21, 2012.
In addition, redshirt sophomore quarterback Scott McCummings (Natick, Mass.) will miss the beginning of preseason camp due to excused personal reasons.

YESSSSSS! Now, we need Mike Nebriech to lock up the #2 spot on the chart. Let’s go boys, time to take back the Big East! Huskies all the way. From two of the 19,000 faithful.

    Steve

i wouldnt say there are 19,000 faithful atleast half of them come in 2nd qtr leave half way through the 3rd. i sit next to alot of them. same faces every game for about a qtr and a half until their drunkness starts to wear off

Anyone, what did I miss on McCummings? Been very busy with family and friends medical issues. Missing my sports page a lot lately.

  3. TR says:

The choice of McEntee as back-up is a good one. He has experience, knows the offense, and improved through the season. If Whitmer “goes down”, John can fill the gap for that game. Improvement by at least one of the other three is “key” for the future (of the position).

  4. Frank says:

Thank freaking god! I truly believe most of the problems at the QB position were started by during camp last season. Too many people rotating in, no consistency and it did nothing for the kids competing and their confidence. I honestly think Johnny Mac is still too high on the depth chart and hope that Neibrich or Cochran (when he is healthy) jump past him. Looking forward to the season! See you next week at open practice!

  5. RST says:

Curious about what the depth chart actually means. Does it mean the McEntee and Nebrich are co-number two, Cochran 4th, and McCummings 5th? If so, do we think McCummings could be looking elsewhere given that he is excused from the beginning of camp? If so, that would be sad. I thought he added a lot.

You know what I absolutely love?

Outside of Johnny Mac, who really shouldn’t be a factor, we 1) believe the QB position is now a strength or average at worst and 2) I’m seeing 3 sophs and a freshman. Good and young – should be a good sign for several years.

  7. Uc Blue says:

a good kid doesn’t put a victory in a win column an athlete does. lot of potential with this team especially on defense. hopefully the addition phillips and the return of smith at WR will be a huge boost to this offense. not to mention ryan returning at tight end

  8. Ryan says:

The biggest plus to this is that Whitmer won’t have to share his first team reps with two other guys. More reps=better timing=better offense

  9. Chris says:

Smart move and let’s be honest, the only choice that can be made. Coach P has forgotten more about the game than I’ll ever know but if anyone other than Whitmer started I would’ve been absolutely stunned.

On a side note, hope the McCummings thing is no big deal and everything works out for the kid.

  10. KB says:

Thank God..I could not sit and watch another season of Johnny u tube

    • Chris says:

Does it make you feel better about yourself to take shots at a good kid and hard worker? Grow up.

      • Steve B says:

He might be a good kid but he didn’t belong on the field. Thank god HCPP isn’t playing the QB is a secret game like he did last preseason.

        • Navin R. Johnson says:

Ole Trick Shot Johnny should be #5 on the chart. He’s a good kid but not 1-A football material.

  11. Jane says:

    Thank you Jesus.

  12. TheJerk says:

boy I hope so. Its the only way half the UCONN fans are going to think this kid is any good

  13. uc blue says:

please no trick shot videos. i didnt believe in mr. trick shot before he did that video and i was confirmed about my feelings through the entire season. i have been around football for a long time and i knew it would not turn out well. a walk on getting the starting QB job in the big east (not the greatest conference but its still division 1). great to see a QB given the chance to be the #1 from day one of the “fall” season
