UConn Football: Free RB Martin Hyppolite?
Tell you what? Kid look like he was shot out of a cannon on that toss sweep in which he scored from 50 on the Bulls Saturday.
Martin Hyppolite should get more burn against Rutgers Saturday, especially against that defense because although he showed speed to the outside against Buffalo, he’s probably more adept at working the middle – and he’s shifty, too.
What’s goin on?
Here’s the redshirt junior talking about his scoring run and how he thinks he can contribute. He should get more burn against Rutgers Saturday especially against the defense because of what he did do and can do. Although he showed speed to the outside against Buffalo, Hyppolite can be just as much of a problem hitting the middle because he’s strong and he will shake you.
“It was definitely exciting after everything I’ve been through with the ACL (missed all of last season) and then getting moved from offense to defense then back to offense. It was my first career touchdown and a long touchdown, too. I never expected to take a sweep 50 yards because they had me as the big back, in between the tackles but I was so excited that I got the chance to do that. Everything worked well. My teammates blocked so well on the play.”
On the role he thinks he can play this season.
“I definitely think I worked hard in the offseason,” Hyppolite said. “I work hard during the season. I think I have a great work ethic. An opportunity to play more, an opportunity to get my hands on the ball more at running back instead of like a blocking tailback is definitely something I want.
“I feel like I can be an addition to the backfield. You see most teams have multiple backs and that one back stays more fresh instead of getting beat up, give him an opportunity to break runs instead of being too tired. I definitely feel like if I can come in and help carry the load. Lyle [McCombs] could play even better and we could have a quicker, faster running game.”
And lastly, again, what DeLeone said about Hyppolite today.
“I was really proud of the kid. He’s hung in there and done the right things and gotten better. I think what you saw, you know, he was in there for about 15-20 plays with all the packages we were in. I think what you saw out of him was, to me, we had some packages for him and he responded tremendously well and like Bill Belichick would say, ‘the more you can do, the more you can do’. That’s the bottom line.”

Question? If NFL teams were going to choose between Hypolite and McCoombs as the every day runner who would they choose? Especially if that back was to run straight up the middle 20 times per game? McCoombs is a solid ball player who can catch and protect the ball. He does not have break away speed from what I have seen. I hear that Joe Williams is a 200 lb track guy. West virginia always killed us with speed. How about getting some break away speed in the back field. McCoombs should not be carrying the ball 30 times per game with a less than 3 yard per carry average. Makes no sense!
McCombs needs a more room than our O-line has been able to produce this season. I have to think a bigger Hyppo stands a better chance in that environment. McCombs has a huge heart and is tough as nails but he needs to get the ball where he can generate some speed before contact. It is tough to be “shifty” when you are in the grasp of one or more defensive linemen.
Yes…free Hyppolyte a d give Delorenzo some touches..Our quick shifty lil back must be a bit beat up at this point..the competition and intensity curve is go na be much more steep with the rest of the schedule….in terms of the play calling … DELEONE = DEMENTIA
Despite rumors to the contrary, there are other productive RB’s at UCONN besides Lyle McCombs!
Sometimes we all try to be funny but you can’t top some things that well paid folks get to decide. Then we fans can only comment on. Of course I am referring to our staff that continually sends our quick/shifty 166 lb back up the gut to be punished, then come up with a sweep for our 214 pounder. Simply genius.
Then George steals a BB quote? I’ll stop.
BB Wesleyan U 1975…The more you can do, the more you can do….Makes me hurt even more that I lost out on college. This makes me a slow reader, did I miss out on the other genius SadHuskie today?
Not sure why they don’t split the carries up some more. I like Lyle a lot but he is 166 pounds which is tough for a wide receiver never mind a running back at a BCS school to carry the ball as much as he does.
Who knows where UConn would be if they had given the kid the rock earlier in the season.
Absolutely….we would be undefeated and solidly in the Top 10!
