Q: Why did UConn hire Kermit Buggs as a Running Backs coach? He seems to have significant defensive experience, but not too much with offense. Wouldn’t it make more sense to hire someone with a history of coaching running backs and was successful? It was the same with Clayton White, who was predominantly a special teams and db coach. Your thoughts? – Kevin “Tiger Face” Doeg Clemson, SC

A: Hi Kevin. Kermit Buggs certainly has plenty of defensive experience but he has offense in his background. It’s where he started. Click here. It’s what he wants to get back to as well. I suspect another reason he was hired is because of his reputation as a recruiter. It’s pretty solid and can only help the program. Thanks man…

Is that in part why Coach Brown left? What does BC pay coaches as compared to UConn?

This is where I start to get psyched about UCONN football again for next season. Coaching choices seem good and I am really, really looking forward to some new blood.
Dez, I hope you don’t decide to move to another team/market. I love reading your work !

OK, I’m really psyched by Buggs and Weist. I think they are huge upgrades to the UConn program. Recruiting is the main thing but both these guys bring real coaching skills to the program.

Next year will be better but 2014 and 2015 will be awesome!

Buggs (Penn ST.) + Weist (Alabama) had exposure in big time programs. These 2 know what top notch football is all about. They bring a breath of fresh air to a stale program. I like what I see. I hope that the low pay does not send them packing after 1-2 years. FYI. UL coach Strong new contract pays him 3.7 mil per year. I bet the assistants get double what UC pays. A lot comes down to $$$.
