Though he has played his high school ball in Connecticut, Paschal Chukwu will be taking his game over the state line. Chukwu, the 7-foot-2 Fairfield Prep center, committed to Providence on Thursday night (confirming via twitter), which, by that time, was no surprise.
From an ESPN report:
“I’m close to the coaching staff, I’ve been up to Providence many times and I thought it was a good fit for me,” Chukwu told ESPN. “I like how Coach Cooley relates to players.”
Cooley, who coached Fairfield University, had history with Chukwu, who appeared to be heavily leaning toward Catholic schools. His other recent official visit was to St. Joe’s.
UConn did make a significant effort. Coach Kevin Ollie was at several of Fairield Prep’s games last season, and Chukwu came up for the UConn-Louisville game in Janurary. But the momentum didn’t continue.
Now UConn and Providence battle over another top-100 caliber big man, Abdul-Malik Abu, who has visited both. When Abu tweeted his congratulations Thursday night, Chukwu tweeted back: “thanx bro. it’s your turn now.”
