FYI: UConn Hasn’t Given Up on Big East Tournament
STORRS – As many pointed out, UConn included the Big East Tournament in its men’s basketball schedule, even though the Huskies are not eligible to play in it. I asked around Gampel today and found this was no accident or error.
UConn AD Warde Manuel and president Susan Herbst are still hoping to work with Big East presidents and officials to get them to reconsider at some point down the road. It’s a long shot, but UConn is holding out hope. Syracuse was once allowed to play in a league tournament despite an NCAA ban, but more recently, conferences have followed along with the NCAA and not allowed ineligible schools to participate in league tournaments. So it was no surprise in April when the Big East let it be known that UConn would not be part of the Garden party in 2013.
However, this is an unique situation. UConn’s NCAA ban is due to APR scores from 2009-10 and 2010-11. Since UConn’s more recent scores would have made them eligible, if used, one supposes the Big East could choose to look at more recent recent scores and allow UConn to play. I imagine this would be UConn’s case.
Again, this is a longshot. But we simply pass it along – this is why the tournament dates were tacked on to the end of UConn’s schedule.

Thanks good information.
Could UCONN make a case that they could be allow to play in Big East Tournament with the mess that NCAA did with UNC… Cheats are allow to play and Honest people are not…
I suppose that since all of the BE teams are regularly included in the BE Tournament, the tournament could be considered part of the regular season. A team does not even have to win a game to get in. The games are all scheduled well in advance before the seedings are known. If any teams were to be eliminated from the tournament, then UConn would be among them, but all teams are included. (This is not the case with the NCAA Tournement of the NIT.) I think UConn has a good case for being included in the tournament. The BE may not want UConn in the tournament because if UConn wins, the BE would forfeit its automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. But is that a reason to keep a team out, especially when it’s unlikely that UConn will win the BE Tournament?
The Big East disrespects UConn. Always did. Don’t forget that one of the representatives on the NCAA committee was from Villanova.
I thinks its absurd and idiotic to punish the students and players for what 2009 and 2011 students and players did thats the most assinnine thing I ever heard thats like giving me a jail sentence cause my brother stole a car 2 years ago sounds stupid
there you go ncaa in search of total stupiity thats teaching are future
