Jim Calhoun: Huskies have ‘Purest Approach to Basketball:’ [USVI Daily News]

by Categorized: Jim Calhoun, Kevin Ollie, UConn men's basketball

The U.S. Virgin Islands Daily News, which does a really nice job covering this tournament, caught up with Jim Calhoun, who is on the trip with his family, when the Huskies reached town. I’m reading it here at the arena as Mercer and George Mason fight it out in game one.

Tim Chapman’s story is not on their website yet, but I imagine it will be soon;

click here for their main sports page.

A few of Calhoun’s thoughts:

      “If I coudn’t get my sniff and hear the ball bounce, I’d feel kind

      0f funny … My role, as a guy who loves the game, is to hopefully

       be a resource for Kevin [Ollie].”

State of the team

      “… This team, in some sort of ways, has the purest approach to

       basketball. They’re playing to win games and then keep right on

       going. The only tournament is every single game they play.”

On the schedule:

      ” … If we’re going to ask our kids to go to Germany right before

       midterms, have them come back and do their mid-terms and

       then come here, we’ve got to make sure we have an understanding

      about that. Hiring more tutors, putting more monies into all that

     kind of thing.”
