Jim Calhoun on Notre Dame’s Departure, And More …
STORRS – UConn officials did not offer a comment on Notre Dame’s move from The Big East to the ACC. I did catch up with Jim Calhoun, who was watching the pick-up action, this afternoon.
“All I can say is, I’m surprised, but I’m not shocked,” Calhoun said. “All I keep hearing is, ‘[conference realignment] is gong to continue. And it has continued. Of course, it’s a blow to the Big East …
“We need to continue to take care of ourselves, be it building facilities, be it recruiting good players and winning games. If we take care of UConn, everything else will take care of itself. We can’t control other schools, but we can control who we are.”
As for Calhoun’s own status, he said there was nothing new. He left campus about 4 p.m.
There were more closed-door meetings with the key players, we’re hearing, and a decision on whether he will retire – and who will succeed him and on what terms - is still being hashed out. Resolution may be close.
“… Life is full of hard decisions,” Calhoun said. “We having the discussions we need to have about moving forward.”

The move of ND to the ACC does not effect the Big East conference. They were not football members and brought nothing to the Big East table and were not true members of the BE. Just takers, not givers. Big East basketball was much more effected by the loss of Cuse and Pitt. However, given the number of basketball games in a season, a team such as UConn can schedule OOC games to keep their RPI above what is required to participate in the ncaa tourney.
Great coach-put UConn and Ct. on the map. Good luck to coach in the future. UConn BB Program is bigger than any individual- and will continue to be top 5 in USA.
Good luck to you Coach Calhoun. You will be missed by many. Thanks for the memories and for all you’ve done for UConn and all those associated with The University. I hope your charity work continues too. God bless you in your retirement. Wishing you all good things!
