Here’s a take on Jim Calhoun from one of the great writers, and great gentlemen, in our business, Leigh Montville, a fellow New Haven guy (and a fellow Notre Dame-West Haven alum) who is now contributing to the new venture, Sports On Earth. He has written many brilliant books on sports.

Leigh is a UConn grad, and goes way back to the early Boston days with Calhoun, and collaborated on his 1999 book, “Dare to Dream.”

Here is Montville’s piece on Calhoun’s retirement, called The Final Chapter.

I just missed the Toby Kimball years, but I was there for Wes and Bill Corley. I saw Wes go off for 50 against Maine and Corley for 51 against UNH. If there had been a 3-point line for Wes, he would have had 65 points. But Toby Kimball should be mentioned as one of the all-time great Huskies. He was possibly the greatest rebounder in UConn history. OK, he played against Yankee Conference-type players, but he had some unbelievable games.
