Mailbag 4/16: Some Thoughts on R.J. Evans
Question: Dom, will Evans have to sit out a year prior to joining the Huskies? Realistically, can we expect more than 8-12 minutes from this guy? He’s already 4th in the backcourt pecking order: Shabazz, Boatright, Calhoun, and then Evans. Thoughts?

A: Tony, I really wouldn’t get too fired up about this, in either direction. R.J. Evans, who can play next year, is a good, solid, experienced player who will bring some maturity and stability to the program for what figures to be a very difficult 2012-13 season, and as a grad student he can set a strong academic example. On the court, he can play a role with his varius skills. I see him as filling a void left by Donnell Beverly, who was also really missed last season. And UConn gets the scholarship back next year. I think its a win-win situation all around, if not high impact or high risk kind of thing

Doesn’t this allow the Huskies to go almost exclusively three guard and push the tempo? Calhoun had his start coaching that way – perhaps he’s thinking he’d like to go that way for his final push.
He will play a three guard lineup at times but it won’t be the primary lineup. Not with three small forwards on scholarship anyway. And, if the team were to play with three guards, the lineup would likely include Shabazz, Boatright and Calhoun.
Evans does not have to sit out a season. Since he’s graduating with a year of eligibility remaining, he could go anywhere to play without having to sit out. That’s the relatively new NCAA rule.
Let’s go back to the 2-2-1 full court press from the Ollie/Sheffer/Ray days. We’re gonna need to push tempo with this team, as our halfcourt offense from this past season left just a liiiitle to be desired.

Next years starting lineup:
Napier
Boatright
Olander
Smith
Daniels
Not a bad mid-major starting lineup
But as always… *Subject To Change*. Giffey and Calhoun will make their way into the starting lineup at different points in the season.
I agree! I see another below .500 season in the Big East. Only the cupcakes will keep this mid-major lineup from a below .500 full season record. SSDD . . .
