Question: Hey, Dom, any word on the aircraft carrier game that UConn is supposedly partaking in this fall? I read something saying that SDSU and Syracuse are playing on the Midway on Nov. 9. If UConn does play in it, will it be their first regular season game, and who will it be against?
A: Glad you asked, Russell. The “Battle for the Midway” is a different event, separate from the Carrier Classic. Because there is no active carrier to be available in San Diego, the Carrier Classic is going to be played on the East Coast next Nov. 9, possibly near Charleston, S.C., and hopefully on an active aircraft carrier. (That’s not definite yet.)
San Diego organizers, still desiring a game out there, have lined up Syracuse and San Diego State for their own game on The Midway, also on Nov. 9.
But Mike Whalen, director of Morale Entertainment Foundation, told me tonight the Carrier Classic is still on and still committed to UConn playing in it. “UConn is our team, we’re standing with them,” he said. UConn and Morale Entertainment have had a memo of understanding since last fall. UConn is hanging loose, to see what eventually happens with the event.
The opponent is to be determined in the next few weeks. It was to be Arizona when the game was going to be played in San Diego, but Arizona does not want to travel to the East Coast, so a new opponent will be found. Notre Dame and Ohio State will play a women’s game in the Carrier Classic.
That’s where we stand. If it’s Nov. 9, it could be the first game of the season.
Whalen is hoping the UConn women’s team will play in the Carrier Classic in 2013.
