Niels Giffey, Germany Still Alive In European Championships

by Categorized: Niels Giffey, UConn men's basketball

STORRS – Lots of talk around Gampel Pavilion about one of the Huskies who is a long way away: Niels Giffey.

Playing with the German National Team in the European Championships, (EuroBasket ’13) Giffey, who is going into his senior season, is making some waves. He scored 14 points as  Germany stunned France – Tony Parker’s team – on Wednesday. On Thursday Germany lost an overtime game to Belgium in Slovenia. Giffey played 25 minutes against Belgium, scoring nine points, hitting 4 of 6 from  the floor, and getting four rebounds.

Germany is playing in Group A, with remaining games against Ukraine on Friday, Great Britain on Sunday and Israel on Monday. The top three teams from the group advance.

If Germany advances, Giffey could be there until late September. He is enrolled at UConn for the fall semester and is keeping up with classes on line; UConn coaches believe he will have no trouble with make-up assignments when he gets back. Giffey has always been a solid student.

… Now, what if he plays so well over there he gets an offer to turn pro right away? Could be an interesting decision.
