Kuran Iverson, from Windsor and Northwest Catholic, has committed to Memphis, as first reported by ESPN’s Reggie Rankin, so depending on how long he stays, he could someday face UConn as a Big East opponent.

Iverson, who will play this year at Fisburne Military School in Virginia, made numerous unofficial visits to UConn, the last one in August.  But he and the UConn staff never seemed to be more than lukewarm about each other.

Iverson needs to improve his academics, which is why he is headed to Fishburne, and his stock as a player has been up and down. He was an elite prospect when he first appeared on the radar, then dropped significantly, but picked it back up this past summer. He was impressive at times in the Greater Hartford Pro Am, against some grown-up competition, and with his ability at move in the open floor at 6-foot-8, and his passing skills, is an interesting talent.

UConn, of course, would always be reluctant to pass on a talented kid from Connecticut, but as far back as last spring the words was that they were more monitoring Iverson, to see if he got things back together, than recruiting him.

During the summer, Iverson said UConn was still in the mix, “yeah, a little bit.” He was also reportedly leaning toward Florida, but on Tuesday he chose Memphis.

Here is a take from CBSSports’ Jeff Borzello, who ranked Iverson No. 22.

UConn coaches are out on the road this week, with Kevin Ollie heading to Chicago for the big visit with the No.1 recruit, Jabari Parker. On Thursday, Xavier Rathan-Mayes is expected at UConn for an official visit.

Here is a story I did on Iverson out of  the Pro Am last July.

One Response to Rankin: Northwest Catholic’s Iverson Chooses Memphis [ESPN]

hopefully kuran isn’t going to be the real deal. He definitely has the make up for being a big time player. He’s a 6ft 8 lanky small forward with longer arms than ater majok. I just don’t know if he has the mentality to become the player his talents should turn into. Best of luck to Kuran joining Memphis. Where all the recruits they sign are athletic freaks like the barton brothers, but have no basketball skills or IQ on the court.
