Rick Pitino: Huskies “Used to Jim Calhoun Being Out …”
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Rick Pitino-Jim Calhoun rivalry is on hold for now, with Calhoun out on medical leave.
After Louisville beat Rutgers on Saturday, Pitino was asked about the potential impact of missing the coach for an extended period. He said …
“I think under normal circumstances it would hurt, but Connecticut is so used to him being out. He was suspended three games earlier, so I think they are used to it a little bit. They played great [Saturday]. played super defense and held Seton Hall to 19 points in the first half. I think they are used to it.”
Wow, kind of a strange quote there, isn’t it? We just pass it along. … George Blaney will coach the Huskies in Calhoun’s stead as they play Pitino’s Louisville team Monday. Blaney and Pitino go back 40 years, to when Blaney was coaching Holy Cross and Pitino a player for UMass.
“I’ve known him all the way back to when he was a player,” Blaney said. “He’s one of the great coaches. His teams play hard all the time, they don’t stop and they don’t give in. You look at all the great comebacks he’s had. He’ll have them ready to play.”
Lots more on the UConn-Louisville game on our main website later Sunday, and in the Monday Courant.

Jim Calhoun with his multiple serious affirmaties and suspensions is even getting negative comments from opposing coaches–maybe it’s time UConn’s AD thought about replacing Jim, for his own good. Seems he doesn’t know when to quit–it good Jim to quit while you are ahead. Your island in HogsHead, NC must look good at this time of the year. It is time got a young, black, coach for its Men’s team. Uconn does not want to look like they are prejudiced?
Probably the stupidist comment I have ever seen posted — on any site. Congrats!!
Calhoun cant quit…he;s addicted to winning. You mad bro?
It is obvious that the above comment was left by a complete idiot.

FREE QUOTE OK BUT HIS MAKES NO SENSE.
Coach Calhoun will know when to retire.
His legacy is assured. He has always been a love or hate personality. Thank you Coach Calhoun. Uconn loves and respects you.
Pitino is an idiot…always has been …always will be…
I have already posted a comment on Facebook about the lack of chemistry and team unity, which really blew up in the second half of tonight’s loss against Pitino’s team,
where they just stopped playing halfway through and let themselves get embarrassed on National TV. Forget about the coaching. I am not sure any coach could fix this group right now because they are really showing that they are just a collection of individuals and not a team. Unless that changes, they are done this season. If the coach was watching, I hope he had the good sense to turn off the set when the UL lead got to 30. He can always use the video later on to demo “bad basketball”. While ESPN referenced the KU blowout loss in ’95, that was a different group of players that just had an off night. They responded by winning most of their remaining games that year before losing in the Elite 8 to UCLA. Is there any irony that the HC in waiting Kevin Ollie was the floor general of that team that was able to pick themselves back up? I see no signs of similar leadership with this group.
