UConn Men Join Field For Puerto Rico Tournament in 2014

by Categorized: UConn men's basketball

UConn has signed on to play in the Puerto Rico Tip-Off on Nov. 20-23 of 2014.

The Huskies, who have played in Hawaii, Alaska, the Virgin Islands, the Bahamas, Germany, and other exotic locales in past early-season events, have never played in this tournament, which began in 2007.

UConn will join Boston College (there you go, again), College of Charleston, Dayton, George Mason, New Mexico, Texas A&M and West Virginia.

Each team will play one game on Thursday, Friday and Sunday. The two teams that survive the bracket undefeated after two days will meet for the championship on Nov. 23. All the games will be on one ESPN network or another.

Miami, Xavier, Villanova, Minnesota, Alabama and Oklahoma State are past winners of this tournament. The 2012 Puerto Rico Tip-off starts Thursday.

Looking at the tournament at first blush, it’s a decent field, nothing spectacular, but a chance for UConn to take a desirable trip and get national exposure. The Huskies will need to beef up their non-conference schedule in other places to maintain the needed RPI potential, especially with Louisville out of the AAC next season. So far we know there will be games at Florida and Stanford, to complete home-and-homes, and Texas will be coming to Connecticut to resume that series next season.
