Updating our earlier post with a few more details …

UConn and Michigan State are finalizing details to open the men’s basketball season at Ramstein Air Force Base in Germany, according to ESPN, which is negotiating with the Department of Defense for the game.

“With so many of our [service men and women] coming from the war front, it’s appropriate for our kids to honor them,”

Jim Calhoun told ESPN. “This will be something our kids will remember for a lifetime.”

The Huskies, though ineligible for the NCAA Tournament, are putting together a challenging and interesting regular season schedule. They have lined up a game against Washington at home on Dec. 29, and will play NC State in the Jimmy V Classic at Madison Square Garden on Dec. 4. Originially, UConn was to play on an active aircraft carrier in San Diego, but that fell through and they began lining up another national game for Nov. 9. This would be a strong result, keeping the program in the national limelight. A few days after returning from Germany, they will have to fly to the U.S. Virgin Islands for the Paradise Jam.

It’s estimated that about 3,000 active service personnel would be at the game, which would start about 10 p.m. in Germany, for an early evening tip-off here.

Here is Andy Katz’s blog post on the game.

Of course, the game will be a homecoming for three Huskies from Germany, Niels Giffey, Enosch Wolf and newcomer Leon Tolksdorf, though UConn officials were saying that was not really a factor in scheduling it. All three are in Germany now, to return to Storrs for the second summer session of classes.

Giffey and Tolksdorf are from the Berlin area, about three hours away. Wolfe is from Gottingen, about 3 1/2 hours away. Ramstein AFB is in the extreme southwest corner of Germany, near the Luxemborg border, about 10 miles west of the town of Kaiserslautern.

When UConn finally decided to pull out of the Carrier Classic a couple of months ago, it was with this possibiluty in mind.

History: The Huskies and Spartans have split four previous games, with the winner going on to win the national championship each time.

I hope we scheduled this game to play a tough michigan state team and a mastermind of a coach in tom izzo. Rather then heading into Berlin, Germany to recruit more of these white german stiffs.

It must be sooooo difficult for these ”student/athletes”, ROFLMAO, to keep up their GPA, oh sorry about that, with all that worldwide traveling and the difficult courses they are enrolled in. Can you say free vacation for coaches and staff?
